IMHO once the kid turns 18 the rules start to change, and if the child makes an adult choice like moving in with the BF, there are consequences.

Some additional data would be nice such as the daughter's age, only child, how long she was gone, and if they had a rules meeting before she moved back in. Also, who posted, I kind of think the mom.

His house, his rules. She’s always welcome to find another place to live. Wonder if she’s living there rent free. Probably.

I agree. And if she doesn’t stop treating her father like an enemy she should be shown the door.

Already, is she contributing toward the costs of the household—or just trying to make more difficult the job of the one who is paying her share?

My house, my rules. Want to pay rent for the bedroom, part of the electric bill, then it’s all yours. I’ll charge you $300 a month. Oh, and since you are an adult now, you can also contribute to buying food, and pay your own car insurance. The only thing I would pay for is if the daughter is under 26, I’ll pick up her health insurance from my company.

Funny thing is, my office was my son’s bedroom prior to him moving out. We still keep the bed in there when he comes to stay with us. And when he does, he brings groceries, picks up a dinner tab and walks and cares for the dog. Best part is, he lives only 15 minutes from us so if my wife or I am too tired to walk the dog at night, he comes over and does it without hesitation.

When adult children move back home, they’re guests, preferably paying guests.

He’s wrong only if he allows his daughter to dictate the terms of her moving back into their home. She needs to start acting like an adult.

Agreed. Used to be “when you’re 18, you’re out the door!”
Too many Antifas have proliferated in Mommy and Daddy’s basement WELL past the age of 18.

For example, in NYS you can receive child support payments on behalf a “child” through age 21, yet said “child” can vote as an adult at age 18, 19 and 20.

He can choose what to do with the rooms in his house.

If his daughter doesn’t like it, she can leave.

I am with Dad on this issue. Not only is this his house, he needs the room for business purposes, which pay the bills!

Spoiled brat. She’s lucky to have a room at all. If she wants privacy, she can get her own place. Presumably she is not paying rent to her parents, so...tough cookies.

Whose name is on the mortgage? Dad? Well in that case dad gets to say where the daughter stays. If she’s upset, she should get an apartment.

Well she’s an adult now. She can get her own apartment or live under dad’s rules.

"A Reddit user shares that he turned his daughter’s bedroom into a home office..."

Not "her" bedroom. Dad and Mom own it. They were just housing the kid in that room until she moved on.

Move your feet, lose your seat

Grow a pair Dad, and point her toward the door option.

She needs to be reminded her stay is temporary. No need to make it like home.

“Some additional data would be nice such as the daughter’s age, only child, how long she was gone, and if they had a rules meeting before she moved back in”

totally ...

and speaking of “rules”: after i graduated from undergrad school and briefly lived at my parents’ home again before i went off to grad school, i paid a token room and board fee and was very happy to do that ... to some degree, it gave me the status of a boarder, and i could live there like a boarder, free to come and go, but respectful of the rights and needs of everyone else who lived there ...
