One of the five Memphis officers charged with the murder of Tyre Nichols was the president of the Mississippi branch of a scandal-ridden fraternity.
Tadarrius Bean, 24, who was fired over his role in Nichols' brutal beating, served as the head of the Omega Psi Phi's Eta Zeta chapter at the University of Mississippi, according to his LinkedIn.
Although the fraternity boasts its more than 100 year history as a haven for black college students, it has been at the center of several hazing incidents in recent years.
One chapter in Virginia was suspended after members were found beaten and forced to pour hot sauce on their genitals, while two other members in a New York chapter were arrested for paddling a man's testicles up to 200 times.
Bean and the four other officers involved in Nichols' death continue to be scrutinized after a series of videos revealed the extent of their actions when arresting the 29-year-old and ignoring his twitching body as lay dying.
Founded in 1911 at Howard University, a historically black college, Omega Psi Phi champions itself as a fraternity 'on the front line, leveraging its power, influence and more than 100 years of commitment to the uplift of our people and our communities.'
But like many frats, Omega Psi Phi has been plagued with several scandals regarding abuse and hazing towards new members.
In 2019, a Virginia chapter at Old Dominion University was suspended for five years following an investigation into disturbing hazing incidents.
Members of the Tau Lambda chapter were found to have beaten prospective members, forced them to drink hot sauce and pour it on their genitals to simulate having Sexually Transmitted Disease, The Virginian Pilot reported.

[College fraternities] == [White Supremacy]
“Houston Apollo, we’ve successfully connected this incident to White Supremacy.”
My fraternity initiation, back in 1962, consisted of “branding,” except it was fake. They dropped a couple of warm wax globs from a candle on our backs after showing us a glowing wire coat hanger. Didn’t do any damage but it scared us.
We called it “Hell week.” It lasted from Sunday to Friday morning. Got paddled a few times. Did a lot of push-ups and a lot of cleaning, scrubbing, painting the house.
After it was over, we pledges ended up with real true bonds with our brothers because we all went through the same hell week.
Today’s fraternity guys are pansies.
They should change the name to Psi Chi Omega.
There was a black guy in my Army unit that was from that fraternity. He had 3 big Greek letters BRANDED into his chest the top one you could see good was the Omega sign. Not tiny thin Bobbie pin brands, I have branded cattle and this guy was full on branded on his left chest 3 solid times. He was not the highest ranking but was definitely the leader of his pack.
I didn’t even glance the comments before posting. Corroboration is always nice.
The “Q Dogs” as they called themselves were almost all branded (yes, that kind of branding) with some variant of the Greek letters.”
Sounds like a gang. When I was in college frat boys wore white shoes and white belts and consumed ridiculous quantities of booze. Not my style.
What do you do when you’re “……” and you know you’re a man!
One of the 90% who give the other 10% a bad name.
The Frat name is Gonna Beta Testes
That’s nuts.
Memphis is doing a great job on their background checks.
Sack them all.
well then...i think you should go protest....prove you really mean business.
Go Broncos!
I have always wondered what it is about these fraternities that make them so attractive and worthy to join, that an applicant would willingly go through these torture and humiliation…
I find it odd that blacks would capture their own and sell them into slavery. That's why slaves got to this country. They did that to themselves.
At university in the 70s it was not almost branded, they had big brands burned onto their biceps.
That would skew the numbers for disciplinary actions against black vs. white officers in an unfavorable direction.
You may recall President Obama's Executive Order 13548, which was signed on 26 July 2010. That Order directed the various departments of the Executive Branch to "improve their efforts to employ workers with disabilities through increased recruitment, hiring, and retention of these individuals."
This was soon clarified to include mental disabilities, including learning disabilities and behavioral disabilities.
The Washington Times wrote an article called Holder’s “severe mental deficiency” on the impact of the hiring and "retention" practices that would result from this Order, and how these could affect the Department of Justice.
