Two TVs with separate streaming devices (Roku)
Self | 1/27/2023 | Self

When setting up Roku devices (or similar) on two TVs, are each Roku independent of the other? For instance, say we add a streaming channel that requires a code or confirmation. Does each Roku need to do this separately? Or does setting it up with one Roku impact the other Roku on the account and other TV?

Yes, but YOU were able to choose the ones you wanted and forced to pay for what you did not. It is so freeing.

Yes, each is independent of the other when choosing channels.

All the ones I have bought the last few years required an account during set up before it would even work. I tried my best to dodge it but could not.

Even better is to get a TV with Roku built-in.

I got one several months ago and I’m not even a big TV-watcher. But I watch more now with Roku. It really comes in handy on rainy Saturday mornings. So many choices and I enjoy the conservative news channels.

I have 2 ROKUs and two Fire TV devices. Each has to be set up separately.

In our case, neither of us watch network TV, other than the occasional sports event. But AT&T (and others) have no problem charging $13/mo on re-transmission fees for local channels (what a scam set up by Congress).

If we go with another service, it will likely be with Sling's Blue option, and Sling doesn't provide local channels, saving users on the monthly re-transmission fees. I've already determined we can get our local channels with a basic indoor antenna, so if we absolutely want to watch a local channel, we can (DVR'ing it is another story).

I find that a bit creepy.

It’s the new rage... Collecting data and selling it. Everyone is doing it now. The worst part is I think you also have to put in a CC number if I remember right. Not for sure, been awhile. But this is so you can subscribe to pay channels on the fly as you use it.

We have two. Each is totally separate from the other.

I don’t normally recommend that. As hardware upgrades come out, you are locked into the whatever the tv came with. Much better to buy an external device. Then in two years when the latest and greatest is released, you can toss it in a drawer or on a different tv and upgrade to better streaming hardware.

I HAVE installed a Roku stick on a Roku tv before (since the tv firmware could only upgrade so far). Or, if you want to swap between a Roku and a FireTV, you can do it easily.

I prefer “dumb TVs” with a firetv cube.

It’s interesting. Our cable TV provider is the same as the internet provider. They increased the cable TV price to unreal prices….like $120/month. I assume they are trying to get out of the cable TV business. Probably too hard to compete with YouTube TV and the others.

We have three Rokus in our house, and as long as you use the same Roku account on all three, when you add a service on one, you add it to all three. However, you often have to re-enter the service’s login credentials separately into each Roku.

For example, I add YouTube TV to one Roku, it shows up on all three Rokus, but I have to log into the YouTube TV account on each Roku separately. Once you log in, your credentials stay on each Roku, so you don’t need to log in every time you launch the channel.

“It’s the new rage... Collecting data and selling it.”

When will the new rage be collecting data and controlling you.

I suspect soon.

I had been using ustv247.tv and this week it went off the air permanently.

What’s the best alternative?

When we were shopping for solutions for our new house, we found that Spectrum had a service they call TV Choice. You get a standard lineup of channels and you get to pick another ten channels. You cannot change your channel selection once you have picked your ten, so choose carefully.

At the time we signed up for it, it was a “hidden” plan that you only got offered if you threatened to take a hike from them. Then they suddenly dropped that on the table.

It’s a streaming service. You install the Spectrum app on your Roku (or other streaming device) and use it pretty much like Netflix, Amazon Prime or any other streaming service.

It’s about half the price of a full cable TV subscription, too!
