The 2024 Copa America tournament will be played in the United States, CONMEBOL confirmed on Friday after an agreement between the South American football confederation and CONCACAF.
The format will feature 16 teams, 10 from CONMEBOL and six from CONCACAF, with teams from the North, Central American and Caribbean confederation qualifying via the 2023-24 CONCACAF Nations League tournament. Discussions with some U.S.-based potential venues are already underway, according to sources, and it's possible that several of the cities set to host World Cup games in 2026 would also be used for the Copa America.
For women's national teams, CONCACAF has invited the top four CONMEBOL national teams to participate in the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. The inaugural edition of this 12-team tournament will also be played in the United States. The two CONCACAF teams that will participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics (United States and Jamaica or Canada) will qualify directly for the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. The remaining six CONCACAF teams will be determined through the 2023 Road to CONCACAF W Gold Cup. The four guest CONMEBOL teams that will participate have been determined based on the results of the 2022 Women's Copa America: Brazil (champion) Colombia (runner-up), Argentina (third place) and Paraguay (fourth place).
The Copa America features all South American national teams, including Brazil and Argentina, but has also historically invited guest countries to participate. The U.S. have participated in the tournament four times previously, most recently in 2016, when they reached the semifinal. That tournament was also held in the United States.
"CONMEBOL and Concacaf are united by historical and affective ties," CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez said in a statement. "But above all, we are united by the passion, characteristic of all the Americas, for football and sports. "We are determined to renew and expand our joint initiatives and projects. We want this passion to translate into more and better competitions and for football and its values to grow and strengthen throughout the hemisphere. "Without a doubt, both confederations believe in big, and we will work with this orientation."
CONMEBOL said in a statement that 2024 Copa America would serve as "preparation for the upcoming World Cup" and give the teams a chance to compete in a 2026 World Cup host country. "This is a partnership to support the ongoing growth of men's and women's football in Concacaf and CONMEBOL, and will truly be of mutual benefit to both Confederations," CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani said in a statement. "Working hand in hand with CONMEBOL, we will deliver elite competitions that will provide more opportunities for our federations, and that we know passionate fans want to see. "We look forward to working together to ensure that football in both regions continues to thrive."
The title is ... speaka da greek
Our biggest issue is where our best athletes go.
Basketball, football, baseball, track and field, have first dibs.
Also, nobody in the hood has a soccer ball…or a field without needles and broken glass.
That’s true but you need to see that a ball is all a kid needs. I learned to play soccer in elementary school when the school threw a ball on the field and left the scene. We all knew what to do. The game did not pick a skilled player to be the QB, the ball bounced randomly to everyone at some time. No one was told to be a receiver or to stay home and block.
I agree that the player goes where the notariety will be greatest. (and safest, I had a wide receiver choose to be careful so he did not ruin his Basket Ball skills with a hand injury.) When I got into soccer, it was far safer than football — and I was not good with my hands — the feet were a different matter. I played soccer after trying the traditional American sports because it fit with me. (I was average size after all) but I ended up coaching football and track too. (as a teacher I needed to be active in every season or I would have lost my free period. Plus, I did relate with kids — very important for coaching. I suspect soccer is here to stay and players will make the same choices that I made. Clearly football has a place for a variety of players with different skills, but so does soccer, and soccer equipment is cheaper, so the hood can afford it more easily.
Are you black or white? (Or other)
Urban or rural?
I played many sports, but played a ton of basketball with city blacks.
“Soccer is faggot white boy shit”.
There’s a reason I play co-Ed volleyball instead of basketball now.
Will Covfefe be served?
While growing up I was in an all white community—with lots of Hispanics now: i was there in the 60’s
I coached soccer and football at San Mateo HS after graduation and was on the varsity soccer team at Cal. At SM High I coached many blacks as well as other races- they had me work with the defensive backs — I knew a little about man and zone coverage
They should make this permanent.
They had the Centenario in 2016, it was a great tournament.
It coincided with the Euros, so you would have the Euros during the day and the Copa America games at night.
Not a lot of whites on the US Mens’ team now.
And they could still have some North America/South America separate tournaments in the non World Cup years.
I think you will start to see a change.
I think what happened to Damar Hamlin has sent some shockwaves through the black community about the safety of football. They notice white parents less and less let their kids play football, out of the health concerns, and wonder why there isn’t the same level of concern in black households.
So I believe fairly soon, you will begin to see more blacks embrace soccer, especially as more and more black players, like Mbappe, become stars.
They should combine. UEFA has 50+ countries, COMNEBOL only has 10, there’s no reason that the Americas shouldn’t combine into one association.
It’s not hard to find a dozen black athletes from the burbs.
I enjoy soccer on occasion, so I don’t mind being wrong here.
There’s plenty of opportunity in soccer, so we’ll see.
I would LOVE to see both regions combine for this tournament. The Copa America on its own is good but not great and the Gold Cup is weak. Combining both regions helps all parties involved.
Is this like Copacabana? The hottest spot north of Havana.
