Season 1 of House of the Dragon is over, and it is time to take stock. Inevitably, viewers of the HBO series compare it to season 1 of Game of Thrones, which seem to win effortlessly by comparison.
For starters, some viewers said that though they loved the prequel, they felt kind of bored with it. Season 1 for them seemed to lack that spark that made Game of Thrones so exciting and interesting to watch.
"I'm not saying I hate it, but I'm not excited to watch it. No one is talking about it at lunch. I don't think about it after I've watched it. I don't really care about it at all. I don't think any of the characters are as interesting, and the story definitely isn't as exciting. Oh, well. Can't win them all," a viewer wrote on Reddit.

That’s something given that Game of Thrones sucked.
Not enough sex and violence?
Fatigue.... HBO has beaten this horse - dragon? - to death. I cannot get into the politics of some made-up medieval world, where the writers can always fall back on dragons as their deus ex machina.
I figure that’s the only reason people watched it.
Give ‘em lots of sex, perversion and rape
Give ‘em lots of violence, and plenty to hate
Give the people what they want
Give the people what they want

The actors all ducked. The writing in crap. In GOT, the actors were terrific, especially the Lannisters. They carried the show.
GOT was pretty good until they destroyed it in the latter seasons by making it woke.
It is true S1 (thru 4 or so) were pretty darn good (except for the gratuitous nudity and sex) so it the comparison makes sense. But comparing the latter seasons to HOD the latter winds hands-down.
It is clear HOD decided to NOT go woke and it worked to great effect. The closest thing to it, Rings of Power, cratered after just a few weeks as people realized it was NOT Tolkein but rather the adventures of an invulnerable Mary Sue and how stupid and/or evil men are.
It was ruined by the woke a-holes as always. The first few seasons were pretty good. By season 5 women ran every kingdom, as if.
I snoozed 10 minutes into the first episode, haven’t watched it since.
All that garbage makes it boring.
HoTD covered about 30 years in the first season. Still, Emma D’Arcy and Paddy Considine did outstanding work. Milly Alcock was a refreshing surprise with Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke handing their roles well.
Season 2 will likely start with the “Blood and Cheese” murder and head into full out war. The storyline is known, the only surprises are those the show runners introduce. Pretty much everybody dies by end leaving only enough around to continue the family line.
I admit to being a Targaryen fanboy even though most everybody in this show is a bit nuts.
Same here.
Somebody needs to develop and apply a box checker. It would measure the particular screen time for major and minor actor boxes and measure it against non-boxed screen time. It would be interesting.
Part of the problem with House of the Dragon is that aren’t (yet) any characters that are sympathetic are that you can root for without allegiance.
For example: it was easy to be sympathetic to Sansa Stark. She was always put upon but wasn’t quite a rag doll. It was always fun to watch Aria Stark and Danyeres Targarean (sic?) slowly build as formidable characters. Tyrian Lannister I always enjoyed watching. He was likable and I rooted for him as a character even if I thought the Lannisters as a clan unworthy of rooting for.
Plenty of others, too. All the characters in Game of Thrones seemed to grow quickly into memorable type and then you wondered how long they would last: the next season? The next episode???
My chief problem with Game of Thrones is that the characters spent A LOT of time yakking about what their forebearers did. (Lesson: Show me. Don’t tell me.)
In the House of the Dragon, all the characters embody good and bad traits. More mature, perhaps, but no one stands out. There is isn’t anyone (yet) you can get behind and cheer for or wonder about. Some cool scenes. Some interesting (but not yet truly remarkable) characters. Some serious balance-of-power shifting. But right now, no house or character has the upper hand going into season two.
Maybe season one for House of the Dragon should be seen as more the “world-building” season.
No one got time for that. As an actor, you either have it or you don't. As simple as that. They messed up with casting in the HOD. Hollywood is so woke that they forgot how to make entertainment today. Just my two cents.
Maybe season one for House of the Dragon should be seen as more the “world-building” season.

And then put out of its misery.
What made GOT unique was the early impression that no one was safe… major characters died unexpectedly. That changed in the latter seasons where certain “favorites” gained plot armor. It devolved into standard TV formulae and lost its magic.
A prequel suffers from its beginning. There is a defined story to be told and characters who must survive.
Good luck.
They’re missing a key ingredient that made Game of Thrones a massive hit... A curiously cunning and occasionally hilarious midget. The absence of a midget character really leaves you with just a bunch of insest and sex, and insest. It’s meandering and meaningless... Unless you’re into incest.
Then it’s a fantastic show and if so, then you need a psychiatrist sooner rather than later.
Incest isn’t kosher.
