Detectives with the Homicide Bureau of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the scene of a shooting at Mabel’s Roadhouse, where an off-duty sheriff’s deputy took his own life, officials confirmed Friday morning.
A Sheriff’s Information Bureau official confirmed that an off-duty deputy took his own life in a shooting at the bar some time before 2 a.m.
The deputy, who was 33 years old, served two tours in Afghanistan during his four years in the Marines, and had three years with the department, according to his father.
Becky Hansmann, owner of the bar, who made the post Friday morning, said the deputy was not a regular, but had been to the location in the last week. She was not at the bar during the shooting, but staff had notified her of what happened around 1:15 a.m., she said.
She added there was no indication or incident prior to the shooting, and no one else was injured in the incident.

Oddly, the CDC is the agency that records numbers of US suicides.
The number of suicides increased from 45,979 in 2020 to 47,646 in 2021.
The Military Suicide Prevention figure is alarming.
“A study released in 2022 found that as many as 44 veterans die on average per day from suicide when accounting overlooked causes of death that are aligned with suicidal and self harm behavior, which is 2.4 times greater than the official estimate.”
Alcohol is deadly for depressed people. Drugs too.
Exercise is the antidote to depression. It isn't necessarily a cure, but it can help in a big way while you work through the darkness and clouds.

I am convinced that no one should go to war who is a product of a broken home. I’m convinced that if you were brought up in a typical school with a typical American education and was taught lies and propaganda and was not taught basic moral and social values, then you have no business going to war.
War will mess up the mind of the most stable and secure individual. So when you take the average teenager today and put him in an Afghanistan environment; It will not end well.
I had a friend from High School that joined the police department in our city after we got back from service (68-70s). A great guy who made homicide detective. Shot himself and left a wife and children. Of all the guys who joined the police from our community he was the best. The rest were assholes and mental defectives.

Might as well give all the weapons we have to the Ukraine as there won’t be anyone here to use them with that requirement of military entrance needs. You just about covered everyone in the US.
There is a certain amount of dysfunctionality in about every home in the country. Everything becomes disfunctional when it is part of an agenda. You might call it the chicken little syndrome.

The reason I make my observations is because I think back and compare today’s soldiers against the men who fought in World War II. Certainly there were a lot of shellshocked soldiers coming back. Certainly there were a lot of battle scarred veterans who never fully recovered. PTSD was a term we never heard of back then, but that is what many soldiers had.
But now? With tens of thousands of veterans who are suffering mental illnesses, veterans who are homeless, veterans who are depressed and even killing themselves at rates that are off the charts. Especially compared to veterans from 50 and 75 years ago. What changed?
I think we all know the answer to that. Our culture is pathetic. Unless and until America returns to its moral, fiscal, and social sanity, we will continue to fail the very men we send out to protect us.

I look at it as a two sided sword. We might be failing them, but the system is causing them to fail themselves also. And they are being taught that the failure is acceptable. And many of the repair actions being advertised are even closing down without the military member noticing it.
And the public is being conned into the gist that we care so much about them while the government is trying like hell to find ways to cut the services going to them because the feds over spent themselves like giving money to countries that can’t pay it back and are only taking a handout because it is offered. Charity begins at home. But it isn’t looking that way.

Approx 224,000 population. Listed at no. 99 in USA by Wikipedia. Not THAT small. I believe when it incorporated Canyon country, newhall and Saugus, its population jumped
This is a very conservative website that we are on. And many FReepers are veterans and have proudly served in the military.
Yet there are numerous threads wherein many veterans say they would not serve in todays Armed Forces, nor would they urge and encourage their children or grandchildren to serve.
Imposible to get a firm figure on the tragic trend but one veteran suicide is one too many.

I came in during the Vietnam frame and finally retired in 2012 with having the advantage of working at all three major levels of the business, active military, Department of the Army, and finally DOD. (I had a break between the late 60’s to the mid 70’s while I healed) Each level was noticeably different in both the mission and the people and the higher I got in the business it became apparent that there was a real separation between the military and their job descriptions and the reality of the chess game being played from the top end of everyone’s board.
I think one of the factors of the disconnect with the military and its people is the combination of the negative teachings of the public school systems and the reinforcement coming from a media you can’t trust at all. And a major part of that lack of trust is that it has been drilled into the youth early that the teachings they levy are the true and only answer to our problems.
And while they need the threat of our power, they misuse it by not carrying through and then having soldiers and sailors go meals on wheels and humanitarian work that needs social workers and not soldiers. The military is not there to smile and say kind words. We destroy things. That’s our job. And the threat of that destruction becomes useless as our politicians misuse it and make themselves, thus us, a laughing stock world wide. And with the stupidity of people like Obama, Clinton, and GW Bush, all anti-military presidents and in the case of Clinton disposed of a vast amount of our standing military power, we are turned into eunuchs and not warriors. We put down that big stick and have given a lot of them to our competitors who have threatened and use it on us. Except for Trump, who was willing to take the stand for us to do our job, the last presidents since Reagan have done more destruction internationally than our military could by far. The country has inherited a group of milk toasts and questionably proud citizens that have lowered our status from first to third world thinking and developed a horde of victims looking for a set of sheets to hide under.
Am I proud to have served? During my time mostly. Am I proud of what it has morphed into? You can be the judge of that by just seeing what has evolved and the world’s reaction to it. Not a pretty sight. And Biden has added to it right on schedule with his backdoor policies with the Ukraine giving away millions of bucks to them for weapons and support they will never pay back.
So, who’s the fool? Is it the one who does the acts or the ones who follow them while continuing to put people in power that misuse it? Toss up.

While that stat of 44 a day is sad and horrific how many of those are direct result of seeing combat action?
How many of those vets served one enlistment stateside or on a ship or safe base overseas? To mereky label them as vets who commited suicide seems a disservice
I think it also does a disservice to the 19 million vets .
How many of the 44 a day had Anything to do with being a vet?
Maybe they should study the details of the lives of those who committed suicide. Find signs or similarities and maybe prevent some.
Most studies sadly show a person who wants to committ suicide will find a way
