Oh, chute! Flight attendant mistakenly deploys inflatable slide first day on job

A brand-new British Airways flight attendant landed in hot water when he accidentally deployed an inflatable slide while the plane was taxiing.

The unnamed newbie crew member aboard Flight BA75 bound for Lagos, Nigeria, on Friday, Jan. 13, inexplicably opened an emergency door, causing the Boeing 777’s slide to pop out moments after the plane pushed back from the airport gate, the Sun reported.

Emergency crews rushed to the aircraft — thinking it was about to be evacuated — before realizing the neophyte’s embarrassing slip-up.

Stunned passengers were delayed for about four hours.

“The aircraft returned to stand and customers disembarked normally. We apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused, provided them with refreshment vouchers and arranged a replacement aircraft so that they could continue their journey as planned,” a BA rep told the Sun.

The blunder cost the airline about $60,000 — the cost of a new slide, switching to another aircraft and missing the takeoff slot, according to the outlet.

This is a job for women. Of course the man screwed up. Men are not cut out to be stewardesses.

We don’t know who it was that made this error, but you can bet everybody with British Air knows, if they’re interested.
This event will follow that flight attendant for a long time.
His co-workers probably already have a few clever nicknames for him.

Sliding Clyde.
Wrong Door Terry Moore.
Big Mistake Johnny Tate.

“inexplicably opened an emergency door”

You don’t just open a plane door by accident. What was this guy thinking? Did he think it was the door to the bathroom?

With all the times I've tried to swing that big lever over it never budged. Probably a good thing...we were always at 35,000 feet.

LOL... this happened to one of the guys in my training class after about 2 years on the line. I was amazed to see him featured in a video about the incident during our annual training. "He didn't lose his job????" Nope, because he had made it past the 6 month probation period. I expect this guy to lose his job.

Short version -- he was Chief Purser and while waiting for the jetway to be positioned, a passenger distracted him. When the CSR knocked on the window, he turned back to the door, forgetting he had not disarmed it, cranked the handle and almost blew the CSR down the ramp.

A replacement for a 777 slide probably runs into the $80,000 or more range. My friend blew a slide on the 757... cost $50,000 back in 1998. A 777 is a double-lane slide and much larger.

The funniest (strangest) part about this is that I think I took that plane out afterwards. I had shown up to my gate at Chicago and went down the jet bridge... when I got to the end, the mechanics told me I had to wait because they had to replace a slide. I looked down and saw the deflated slide hanging from the forward door. "What happened?" "Some guy busted the slide and nearly killed a gate agent." "OMG! Are they okay? Are we cancelled?" "Nope, we'll just swap it out." I watched them unhook the slide from the brackets, drop it down onto the tarmac, bring up a new slide pack, slide it into the door, lock it all up and done.

My first thought was "Never hire a man to do a woman's job" -- but you beat me to the punch!
