Friday at John F Kennedy International Airport, between a Boeing 777 headed to the UK and a Boeing 737 headed to the Dominican Republic.
One plane was about to take off while the other was crossing the same runway.
The collision was averted when an air controller noticed the two.
Using an expletive, the air traffic controller attempted to stop the Delta aeroplane as it was preparing to take wing.
"Delta 1943, cancel take-off clearance! Delta 1943, cancel take-off clearance!" the controller was captured saying in an audio recording made by LiveATC, a website that posts flight communications.
The Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 then came to a stop on the runway, while the American Airlines Boeing 777 safely crossed in front of it around 20:45 EST (01:45 GMT), said the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The FAA said the planes were around 1,000ft (300m) away from each other when the Delta aircraft stopped. It has since launched an investigation into the near collision.

Human error gets people killed. We need robot ATC’s.
The hits keep coming for Mayor Pete.
Whew! Thank God his cell phone's battery was dead.

Recall in 2020 all the airlines peddling we are Pushing Diversity aka For Whites apply as pilots .
And ButtPlug screaming away about it .
Diversity almost killed 400 plus people .
That was pretty damned close and you can visualize it on the ATC video you linked -

I did not fully understand it until I read the comments on that youtube video. The AA pilots appear to have missed their turn and they turned into the path of another aircraft taking off.
Thank God the ATC was on top of it!
I missed the sarcasm tag. This was a GTC, ground traffic controller. MIT/Lincoln Lab tested an automated traffic control system at Logan Airport (a pretty busy and crowded airport) about 30 years ago. I don't think it went anywhere. There was never any intention of replacing human controllers, simply providing them with tools to assist them.
That was close. How many people on the 777? Memories of Canaries 1977. That was a bad one.
There are a lot of ATC’s who are good at their job. It has to be one of the most stressful jobs in the world with an antiquated system and you have to juggle a LOT of stuff with serious repercussions.
I personally have respect for that guy because he saw it.
That could be an interesting point if it isn’t based entirely on speculation.
Whoa. Thank the Lord no one was injured or killed.
Don’t worry though Petey Buttplug, The Screaming Bender from SouthBend , Indiana is on the case!
As the aviation industry reaches deeper into the barrel for talent, there are going to be more incidents like this.
I would also not be surprised to see certain airports that won't let green pilots taxi but instead have the ground tugs take them all the way to the terminal or the runway.
583 fatalities.
In Gibraltar buses and cars cross the runways.
.
ATC is one of those jobs you can’t compromise with afimitive action check the minority box hires.....or shouldn’t beanyway.......I sure hope that’s not why this happened.
I do too. Absolutely. I couldn't do that job. Too much stress. The slightest distraction could spell disaster. Even if I wanted that job, I don't have the chops.
Bravo to this unsung hero, and all the rest like him!
They missed their hold. There are two parallel runways. They were supposed to hold prior to the Left runway but instead crossed over it to hold prior to the Right runway. It's a rookie mistake. They even passed signs that identified it as a runway.
Here’s a phrase that apparently the airlines simply made up: near miss. They say that if 2 planes almost collide, it’s a near miss. Bullsh.., my friend. It’s a near hit! A collision is a near miss.
[WHAM! CRUNCH!]
“Look, they nearly missed!”
“Yes, but not quite.
