Eight Texas high school students are hospitalized after they were forced to perform 400 push-ups in an hour without water breaks as punishment by their coach

Eight high school students in Texas have been hospitalized after their football coach forced them to do 400 push-ups in an hour without any breaks.

Rockwall-Heath High School Head Football Coach, John Harrell, has been put on administrative leave after he reportedly forced students to do 300 to 400 push-ups during an eighth-period athletic class on Friday.

A mother, who did not want to be identified, claimed the football players were forced to do the intense workout without water breaks, according to Fox 4 News.

She said her son was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis - the breakdown of muscle tissue that can release damaging proteins into the bloodstream, which can cause kidney damage or failure.

It is unclear what the other seven students were diagnosed with. None of the players' identities have been released.

Principal Todd Bradford addressed the situation on Monday, writing in a letter to student-athlete parents: 'On Monday, January 9, 2023, several parents reported that their student(s) subsequently needed medical attention, and in some cases, hospitalization. Please know the District immediately implemented measures to address the situation and provide support for our students.'

It also advised parents to inform their students to see the trainer if they experience not being able to 'bend or extend your arms, unable to lift arms above your head, dark urine (tea or cola-colored), and sharp arm pain,' as well as, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion, or lethargy.

'Student safety is a top priority for Rockwall IDS and we will continue to take immediate and appropriate measures in the best interests of our students as we address this situation,' the letter said.

The Dallas-based school has also launched a third-party investigation into the incident and said students who attended the class on Monday did a light, nonstrenuous workout.

That’s about 7 pushups per minute, if you pace yourself. For a 17 year old athlete, do we really think this is too much?

My PE teacher in grade school in 1968-1970 was a former Marine DI. Every PE class started out with calisthenics. After that he would have us line up, toes on the line, chins on your right shoulder and count off by whatever team sizes were (4, 6 and so on). This was always comical because we were a bunch of 3rd or 4th graders so it would take several attempts for everyone to get it right. When someone messed up the count, we would start over.

During one class we were playing fleece ball (indoor baseball with a soft fleece ball). For every run scored the team in the field would have to stop and do 10 pushups. The other team scored 20 runs so my team ended up doing 200 pushups during a 45-minute class period. As a 10-year-old, my chest was locked up along with several of my classmates. My dad who was a retired USA Chief Warrant Officer took me to school that morning with the intent on whipping this guy’s ass. After my dad got done chewing this guy’s ass (the principal stepped in between the 2) the principal then jumped his ass.

After that we were never subjected to Marine Corps basic training again. We still did calisthenics, but the over-the-top hardcore stuff stopped.

I would have refused. Never let anyone abuse you. I have refused more than one order in my life and never regretted standing my ground. Allowing idiots and scum bags to bully you is setting a terrible precedent.

That's the lesson these players didn't learn and it cost them.

I agree wholeheartedly with that.

No one can start from “nothing” and do 400 pushups in an hour. And water is essential.

“”Summer 1983, Fort Sill, OK, even the Army forced us take water breaks. Getting caught without a canteen full of water was considered a major malfunction.””

Ft. Sill also had a few black flag days when it is just too hot for training, of course that was back in 1972 when the American fighting men were all pansies. (joking)

Even in the 80s there was water made available for extended exercise.

“Without water breaks”

This guy is a coach? A football coach? An expert?

That’s the primary offense.

Read during WWII the Japanese ordered army recruits to hike up Mt. Fuji ( not sure how high up) without drinking water. Three recruits died

Looking up info on Brother Gus the other day, I found Johnny’s over-all record as head coach. I never paid attention, at the time, but it was pretty mediocre. I think that stems from his intractable nepotism at the QB position. His four sons had to play that position. I have no doubt that he dearly loved his teams....I remember a girl rolling her eyes when she heard he had the team over to his home to watch old MHS football films on Christmas day. His son from the class of ‘79 went on to coach Sheldon High to an undefeated season and several State titles. I think the whole clan relocated there, and I wasn’t surprised when his younger brother replaced him as head coach.

The keyboard tough guys here support him 100%.

Yep. All a bunch of Al Bundy types, reimagining their "glory days" from 40 years ago.

Ha I did 496 as punishment for almost walloping the coach with a golf club. I was a better kid for that.

He was a marine..learned my lesson in goofing off in his class.

Let me guess, you are an enlightened, Berkley educated Commifornian.

Clean miss, sweet-cheeks. Born and bred and educated in Virginia. Far from being any sort of "commie."

Although, I should imagine myself to be rather more enlightened than faux tough guy nitwits like you, so thanks for bringing it up.

WHEN I WAS IN THE ARMY I WAS ORDERED TO RUN THE OBSTACLE COURSE (CONFIDENCE COURSE) ALL BY MYSELF AS THE COMPANY WATCHED.

I CRAWLED UNDER THE BARBED WIRE, RAN TO A 3’WIDE TUNNEL DUG IN THE GROUND, CRAWLED IN AND WOULDN’T COME OUT. AN INSTRUCTOR YELLED AT ME TO COME OUT, SO I TOLD HIM TO COME IN AND GET ME. HE STARTED TO JUMP ON THE TUNNEL (NO CONDUIT PIPE JUST BARE EARTH), SO I SCRAMBLED OUT. WE WERE BOTH LAUGHING WHEN A SGT. CAME OVER AND TOLD ME TO WIPE THE SMILE OFF MY FACE. “I CAN’T SGT., I’M TOO HAPPY.” (I WAS JUST THAT WAY, I GUESS.)

“GET DOWN AND GIVE ME 20 (PUSH UPS)!”SO I DID, AND CAME UP SMILING.
“TOLD YOU TO WIPE THAT SMILE OFF YOUR FACE!”
“I CAN’T SGT. I’M STILL TOO HAPPY!” IF THERE WEREN’T HUNDREDS OF EYES ON US HE’D HAVE KILLED ME ON THE SPOT!
“GIVE ME ANOTHER 20!” I DID, AND POPPED UP SMILING, SO AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN, 20 AT A TIME, FOR HUNDREDS OF THEM. WHEN I COULDN’T DO ANYMORE IT WAS SIT UPS. WHEN MY COMPANY SGT FOUND OUT ABOUT IT HE CAME OVER, PUT AN END TO IT, TOLD THIS IMPOTENT SADIST (THERE’S ALWAYS THAT 10%) THAT IF HE EVER MESSED WITH ANY OF HIS MEN AGAIN HE’D KILL HIM, AND TOOK ME TO THE INFIRMARY.

MY ARMS WERE SO SWOLLEN THAT I LOOKED LIKE POPEYE, AND IT TOOK DAYS TO RECOVER.

YOUR EXPECTATIONS ARE WAY, WAY OFF. TRUST ME ON THAT.

It is definitely doable.
I do 600 pushups every day.
I did 1000 pushups for my 66th birthday in December.
Took me slightly over 1 and a half hours.
I didn't drink anything, but it was indoors.
