Eight high school students in Texas have been hospitalized after their football coach forced them to do 400 push-ups in an hour without any breaks.
Rockwall-Heath High School Head Football Coach, John Harrell, has been put on administrative leave after he reportedly forced students to do 300 to 400 push-ups during an eighth-period athletic class on Friday.
A mother, who did not want to be identified, claimed the football players were forced to do the intense workout without water breaks, according to Fox 4 News.
She said her son was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis - the breakdown of muscle tissue that can release damaging proteins into the bloodstream, which can cause kidney damage or failure.
It is unclear what the other seven students were diagnosed with. None of the players' identities have been released.
Principal Todd Bradford addressed the situation on Monday, writing in a letter to student-athlete parents: 'On Monday, January 9, 2023, several parents reported that their student(s) subsequently needed medical attention, and in some cases, hospitalization. Please know the District immediately implemented measures to address the situation and provide support for our students.'
It also advised parents to inform their students to see the trainer if they experience not being able to 'bend or extend your arms, unable to lift arms above your head, dark urine (tea or cola-colored), and sharp arm pain,' as well as, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion, or lethargy.
'Student safety is a top priority for Rockwall IDS and we will continue to take immediate and appropriate measures in the best interests of our students as we address this situation,' the letter said.
The Dallas-based school has also launched a third-party investigation into the incident and said students who attended the class on Monday did a light, nonstrenuous workout.

I would have refused. Never let anyone abuse you.
I have refused more than one order in my life and never regretted standing my ground.
Allowing idiots and scum bags to bully you is setting a terrible precedent.
The Coach immediate declared himself to be trans, changed genders and is now the opposite color of what he...err...she was prior to the incident.
“Gee, I’d been thinking that dumb sh*t high school football coaches like this had gone the way of the dinosaur by now. But I guess not in Texas.”
Let me guess, you are an enlightened, Berkley educated Commifornian.
When I played football in HS here in Texas ages ago this would not have been the least bit unusual . Hours of practice in 100 deg weather, followed by running ladders in full pads, whistle drills, wind sprints
It was kinda abusive but it worked
Fact is our team was in better condition than anyone we played and could beat ranked teams from larger schools regularly (and that school won more championships for their division than could be called a coincidence)
Beat me to it.
The movie version was great.
Summer 1983, Fort Sill, OK, even the Army forced us take water breaks. Getting caught without a canteen full of water was considered a major malfunction.
Also, during lecture breaks we would be formed up outside and sprayed down with water.
This coach is an idiot and an ass if he didn’t let his team drink water. Pushups galore not really the problem here, it is the unsafe conditioning/training.
8 sets of 50 over an hour would allow 5+minutes between each set and that seems utterly reasonable to me. I’m not sure I could do it now—but that’s four decades later. If one guy decided to do all 400 in the space of 10 minutes and was capable, and everyone else decided to emulate him, well, that’s their problem, not the coach’s, so far as I’m concerned.
If they can’t do 8 sets of 50, they can go out for power puff.
power=powder
Great typo as typos go
In Band of Brothers, there's a scene where Captain Sobel made the men pour out their canteens after a long hike, to see if anyone drank. If they did, they had to do the hike again.
Beebs (Gene Stallings) gave a lot of details about how much of the movie was crap.
I’m not sure if it is summer in January in that part of Texas.
I hadn’t heard that. I assumed there would be some exaggeration in the movie.
that’s a lot of pushups to do in 1 hour. What a jerk
************
This was a totally abusive and arbitrary demand used solely to domineer others.
Totally inexcusable.
45 seconds of rest after each set.
I could do that, but hot weather would make it unpleasant.
Also, a hernia risk.
The coach will get fired and may have personal liability.
The guys with muscle injuries or kidney issues were probably trying to knock it out with sets of 20-25.
Bad idea. Once you exhaust a muscle, you need way more than a couple minutes to recover.
LOL Me too-
I remember that documentary. Even Bear eventually knew he went too far. He is lucky those boys didn’t die of heat stroke or kidney failure.
Johnny would have sat the team down for an hour of Algebra 3-4 if he wanted to torture them.
