The United States mail steamship Creole, GEO. W. COUGH, Commander, from New-Orleans Jan. 3, at 6:30 P.M.,; southwest Pass, Jan. 4, at 7:40 A.M., with mails, merchandise and passengers, consigned to LUDLAM, HEINEKEN Co., arrived here last evening.
She brings the important intelligence of the recapture of Galveston by the rebels. The particulars of the affair are given in the following statement by the Purser of the Creole:
NEW-YORK, Sunday, Jan. 11.
To the Agent of the Associated Press:
By the arrival of the United States gunboat Cliftan at Southwest Pass, on the evening of Jan. 3, I learn that early on the morning of Jan 1. the rebels made an attack on the Federal forces at Galveston.
Our gunboats were attacked by five rebel steamers, protected by double rows of bales of cotton, and loaded with troops armed with rides, muskets, shot-guns, &c.
The Harriet Lane was captured by boarding after about all of her officers, including Capt. WAINWRIGHT and Lieut. LEE, and a crew of 130, all told, had been killed by musketry from the rebel steamer. My informant states that but one or two of the officers, and but twelve or fifteen of the crew escaped death. The gunboats Clifton and Owasco were engaged and escaped; the former losing no men, and but one wounded. The Owasco lost one killed and thirteen wounded. Two barks loaded with coal fell into the hands of the enemy.
The Westfield, (flag-ship,) Commodore RENSHAW, was not engaged, being ashore in another channel. Her crew were transferred to transports, and Commodore RENSHAW, fearing she would fall into the hands of the rebels, blew her up. By some mismanagement or accident, the explosion took place before a boat containing Commodore RENSHAW, First Lieut. ZIMMERMANN and the boat's crew got away,
