I was transferred to Vandenberg AFB, just north of Santa Barbara in 1972. We left in Dec 1973 where bridges were washing out there at South Vandenberg because of flooding.

I was transferred back in 1978, that year it was flooding because of a hurricane.

We left there for San Diego in 1982. It had flooded earlier that year.

It is not an uncommon occurrence there.

You’re no doubt familiar with Santa Maria. In 1998, two CHP officers were killed on Hwy. 166 in the middle of the night when the road had totally washed out. The fog was thick and they couldn’t see ahead of them, plunged off the highway into the raging river. Their bodies were found the next day.
