You’re no doubt familiar with Santa Maria. In 1998, two CHP officers were killed on Hwy. 166 in the middle of the night when the road had totally washed out. The fog was thick and they couldn’t see ahead of them, plunged off the highway into the raging river. Their bodies were found the next day.
There are many weather events there, including Vandenfog, that are pretty extreme.
The most intense lightning I ever saw was in a band of thunderstorms just over 101 at Buelton near Lompoc. I lived on Oklahoma for six years and I saw some doozies there. This one won, hands down. I counted 40 lightning strokes in a minute
