Children and adolescents should be proactively evaluated and treated for obesity, according to new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics around childhood obesity.
The guidelines note that treatments, including medications and weight loss surgery, can be effective and can help reduce the risk of developing other health conditions....
... for teens with severe obesity, weight loss surgery is a safe and effective option....

I dunno...maybe put down the fork and get off the gaming chair?
No need for surgical interventions, except to run up the cost.
Better interventions would be a better diet and exercise.
Cut out the junk food and disconnect the plug in drug and make them move.
How about taking the TVs, phones and radios away, and putting them in sports...
Oh, of course I forgot to mention computers...
Come to think of it, that would work for adults, too.
I find it the epitome of irony that people are willing to spend so much on organic designer pet food and won’t feed hummingbirds hummingbird food with red dye in it, because it’s bad for them, and yet think that feeding that crap (junk food) to little kids is harmless.
I agree with you - movement and a supervised exercise program seems to me a whole lot better than subjecting kids to surgery and introducing them to painkillers
I'll bet most kids who are getting fat have easy access to high-sugar and high-carb treats. They are addictive.
Many parents don't realize that this stuff is poison.
And as to exercise/play, absolutely!!!
I can't think of anything better to do with a child than to take them hiking in the woods on weekends.
I mountain bike at a local state park for exercise and I see families hiking and kids biking all the time and they are having the time of their lives.
Kids have boundless energy and if they don't use it, they develop all kinds of problems. I was a hyperactive kid and my mom quickly realized that the solution was running, biking, and playing. And it worked like a charm (for the most part).
How about putting criminals in prison and the insane in asylums so the kids could play outside.

I would hesitate before I sent a chubby child into bariatric surgery, thus complicating their lives forevermore.
Some kids outgrow the baby fat.
After a LapBand, a person really has to watch what is eaten and in which quantities. Incontinence may be a problem until one is used to the change in gut capacity. Besides, childhood is meant to be fun and a period of trying new things.
Translation: Don't hassle the black kids no matter how fat they are. That kind of disrespect will get you into trouble.
“Treatment”??? - Quit eating so much fat & carbs and get out and do something....it’s called excersize and health!
Childhood obesity is child abuse.
In all cases.
Treat it like battery.
What is the difference between 'obese child' and 'child with obesity'?
The former is 'fat kid' and the latter is 'child with a disease'.
The former carries personal stigma, the latter is stigma free and deserving of radical medical intervention.
Perhaps they should get MORE exercise and LESS fast foods? Why does society want to label everything a disease? Make people take some personal responsibility for being fast etc. Decisions have consequences!
The old science showed that when one eats more calories than the body needs, most of those extra calories are stored by the body as fat. The more calories one took in, the more storing of fat. Back then the most effective way to lose or maintain body weight and size was to regulate what one eats and how much of it. The new science apparently has not quite figure out the math on this but what can be expected from the new science when they can’t even do the math on chromosomes. There are only two types and they only go together two ways. But that must of been the old math. Damn...I must be really behind the times.
There isn’t a child walking to school in our small town. They all ride the bus. I saw some teen boys playing bball without shirts. The boobies were disgusting.
I think the food stamp program is part of the problem. It used to be that you caould only get healthy food on food stamps then some idiot said well that’s not fair. What about a birthday cake for my little darling? OK understandable. So instead of allowing an annual birthday cake for each child, even, they opened up the food stamps for all snack foods at any time. As a cashier, as families get 900 bucks a month for food and you should see what they get? Junk food junk food junk food.
My Dad had me mowing the yard, cutting and splitting firewood, shoveling the driveway, and every other chore he could think of. I think I’m still burning calories from my teen years.
