Plan to restore pre-woke classical education at a state-run college is going to provke outrage. So what?
I am thrilled that Ron DeSantis is putting in place people who want to reverse the woke academic coup d'état at one state-run institution of higher education. New College of Florida is a rarity: a public liberal arts small college (675 students) that is part of the State University System of Florida, where in-state tuition is under $7000 a year.
Zac Anderson of the Sarasota Herald Tribune writes:
Gov. Ron DeSantis began the process Friday of transforming Sarasota's New College of Florida into a more conservative institution, appointing six new board members, including conservative activist Christopher Rufo, a dean at conservative Hillsdale College and a senior fellow at The Claremont Institute, a right-wing think tank.
"It is our hope that New College of Florida will become Florida's classical college, more along the lines of a Hillsdale of the south," Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz said in a statement.
The shakeup of the 13-member board is certain to create major tensions at New College, an institution that started as a progressive private school before becoming the state's liberal arts honors college. The small school's student body and faculty have a reputation for leaning left politically.
Factor in the palpable fear and loathing on the left of Ron DeSantis, the new Trump-Hitler. And he is throwing down the gauntlet.

I wonder if the students realize what is being done for them?
Just defund the colleges and problem solved.
The “Three Rs”.
DeSantis is one of the few focusing on the cancerous public and higher education programs, I say Bravo.
Hillsdale of the South... That would be great... New College is good... But it can be BETTER...
He’s picking all the right fights.
- Gay culture at Disney
- Big Gov and Pharma pushing dangerous mRNA gene therapeutics
- Migrants pouring across the border and on our shores
- Leftist Universities and Professors
Do that to ALL public universities in Florida - especially my alma mater, UF.
Also, appoint conservatives to the board and require that diversity include diversity of thought.....meaning Leftists need not apply for at least the next 20 years for academic or administrative positions until balance is finally restored.
I'd add fighting election corruption and actually inserting election integrity and demanding rather quick election results.
Do you have any updates on whether Ben Sasse may actually become President at UF? I’m somewhat in favor of it, as I think we can probably get someone better in that Senate seat, but he’s probably about as conservative as you can get for a University President.
Thanks. I think DeSantis has done pretty good on election security, but not enough in my opinion, at least not yet. He’s still done more than most, for which he deserves credit, but there’s still much room for improvement.
Some examples would be further tightening of mail-in ballots, and moving further away from any electronic counting machines. These are the types of aggressive changes that would match the aggressiveness he’s displayed on the other issues I mentioned.
Hopefully he can make that a priority for his new term, but being rather happy about the last election results, I’m not sure he will. Thanks again.
I went to UF too. It has sure gone downhill recently.
Picking a fight or just finally starting to fight back after decades of being punched in the face by these creeps?
Well, now there are two sides to debate. The WOKE and DeSantis... Before DeSantis ‘professors’ and ‘teachers’ had the only side being represented..
They probably don't and won't realize what is being done for them
In my own college experience, I found more independent thinking at the Junior College level, rather than at the upper levels of college
It seems that in the upper levels , and especially at the Graduate level, thought becomes stogie and static .
I attribute the emphasis on learning and developing independent thought at this junior college level due to the frequency of faculty change, and minimizing faculty tenure.
Faculty tenure is the institutionalization of thought and knowledge mediocrity, which supports thought into 'chronic status quo'
Give me an education in a research university where there is innovation and experimentation, and you will find that innovation translates into the student body as by osmosis,
and encourages and perpetuates more free thinking and independent professional and personal development.
You won't change the universities direction until you bring in the support staff at the faculty level, thus startling the older tenured faculty .
I agree with that. Presumably, some of the sales taxes I pay in my new state go to its university system, so why would I want to fund wokery every time I buy something from Office Depot?
I agree. While our mail-in ballot system is an absentee system (you must apply), it is still universal (anybody can apply). That should be further restricted to the older standard, being exclusively for the military and other people who cannot vote on-site for some reason (at college, elderly or handicapped, etc.).
<>My guess is that they will go for structural change, meaning cutting out entire departments, against which tenure does not offer protection.<>
Meaning adios to Women’s Studies, Black Studies?
And any department that primarily hires sociology grads should be erased.
remembering that liberal arts does not mean progressive arts
