Rolling Stone magazine ^ | Rolling Stone

Posted on 01/07/2023 4:42:12 AM PST by DallasBiff

Aretha Franklin described her mission as a singer like this: “Me with my hand outstretched, hoping someone will take it.” That kind of deep, empathetic bond between artist and listener is the most elemental connection in music. And you can think of our list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time as a celebration of that bond. These are the vocalists that have shaped history and defined our lives — from smooth operators to raw shouters, from gospel to punk, from Sinatra to Selena to SZA

That was exactly what I was going to say Robert Plant and man that guy can still sing Led Zeppelin music my wife loves her home leather face and all I would have to watch her around him and he lives around me part time and is known to sample the soccer moms who I’m sure fall at his feet
We have seen him a few times and a friend of mine that owns a bar knows him somewhat

I’ve seen him in a convertible Mercedes and an old jaguar I know he likes to drink

I always wonder if “Itchykoo Park” ruined The Small Faces for American audiences, because it really didn’t sound like anything else they did.

Yeah, Grace would be my #1 for rock chicks. But man, think the engineers put enough reverb on her voice on White Rabbit in that link you posted? It all works though.

My least favorite is Janis Joplin. Nails on a chalkboard to me.

I probably know more about music the most people who do not play

But I’m dumb on hardware and recording technique

They said of the young “Stevie” Winwood that he sounded like what Ray Charles would’ve sounded like after inhaling helium.

I think it’s a great song but you’re right

Not typical of their sounds

Ogdens Nut Gone Flake was weird to me though sold big in Europe

There’s a great video of Pete Townshend and Keith Moon jamming out to Ogdens Nut Gone Flake.....Little did they know they were watching Keith’s replacement.

I was in high school when Surrealistic Pillow was released. Still one of my favorite albums. Grace Slick announced her arrival in a powerful fashion.

Grace Slick is who people often think of regarding Jefferson Airplane, but I think that the ballads that Marty Balin sang were even better.

Mr Mojo says that Janis Joplin is nails on the chalkboard for him, and I can see that, but I always crank up the volume for Another Piece of my Heart.

I haven’t looked at this thread yet. Gonna check to see if Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Maria Muldaur, Linda Ronstadt make the chick list. A lot of people think Karen Carpenter had the best voice. I’m partial to Eva Cassidy.

From the article:

“…keep in mind that this is the Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices List.

Talent is impressive; genius is transcendent. Sure, many of the people here were born with massive pipes, perfect pitch, and boundless range. Others have rougher, stranger, or more delicate instruments.

As our write-up for the man who ended up at Number 112 notes, “Ozzy Osbourne doesn’t have what most people would call a good voice, but boy does he have a great one.” That could apply to more than a few people here…”

“Even as he aged his voice was great, Greg Lake”

All the more remarkable given the fact that he was a heavy cigarette smoker.
