Posted on 01/02/2023 6:13:51 PM PST by cowboyusa

That was the scariest thing at a Pro Sporting event that I have ever seen.

I believe FCC and transmission rules require the broadcast frequency maintain identifying content continuously. It’s prohibited to leave dead airwaves. For reasons I won’t go into it is a national security concern and a Navigational aspect involved. An assigned frequency of broadcast must maintain content. That’s why sometimes an off air station will have the noise of hammers and saws when there is no scheduled content.

They have them at college games. They’ve been required for many years.

I am surprised they didn’t get one out there right away. If you watch the various replays the training staff was acting “with purpose” more than if it were just a knee or ankle. Those guys knew pretty quickly.

It’s been over 50 years since it’s happened during an NFL game. So a lot of these commentators weren’t even born the last time it happened.

Every few years, I hear about some soccer player collapsing on the field.

Was a routine tackle on his part, not an “awful hit”.

Prayers for the young man.

Stingley was a spinal injury, so usually you can still breathe for those, you just can’t move.

Frankly, I am surprised it hasn’t happened in an NFL game since 1971, given how many times it has happened during soccer matches.

I gained enormous respect for the profession at that time.

The only time Dan Dierdorf shut up.

Off topic for sure but I also found the Dennis Miller experiment on MNF to be fascinating. He outed the scripted over-produced circus that pro sports broadcasts ate. They are almost church-like ceremony productions. Even those interviews on the field are read off que cards off camera angle. Nothing is free spoken. Now tonight the hot potato of segment involvement requires free speaking. Now they have just begun the info-babes on field getting scripts.

I remember how Al Michaels handled the O.J. Car Chase, when Captain Janks made his farcical call to Peter Jennings.

“And Baba Booey to y’all.”

Tonight I found Booger to be someone special. There’s a real good soul in there.

“And I see O.J. and he looks scared.”

I heard Al talking to Howard about it, and how hard he was laughing during it, and kept debating whether he should have finally clued in Peter or not.
