Has anyone learned a foreign language as an adult using an online website? I’m looking to learn a foreign language via online “schooling” and was hoping to get some FReepers feedback. Thank you in advance.

I've had to survive in predominantly French speaks parts of Belgium. I learned enough to find dinner and shop at the local stores. A day trip to Paris required a bit more care to purchase tickets from the edge of the city to a station near the Eiffel Tower. The next "horror" immersion was coming back from Wales. I got into my car at Calais and missed my turn leaving the parking lot. I was driving a long way down a dark toll road without a map. A mini-mart on the inside median had maps. I purchased one using my best attempts to speak French. Figured out where I was and plotted a path back to Mons, Belgium. I rolled into the parking lot at 4 AM and just packed my bags and headed to the airport in Brussels for my flight home. I recovered the bad turn with just 90 minutes to spare.

The son of one of my co-workers studied Mandarin at the school in Monterey. He was recently hired by my employer to screen incoming applicants that need to be fluent in Mandarin as a work requirement.

I had friends who took German, who told me similar things. The one who took Russian told me it was a waste of time, but he did well for his GPA.

He and Mom were kind, loving Parents — both had been in WWII — and I miss them a lot.

LOL, if you actually pronunced it out “Je suis.....” as “juh sweee” instead of (J’suis) “shwee”, then you will give yourself right away as a tourist. Most French courses don’t teach that kind of stuff.

You can maybe find in your local library. They usually have the Spanish at least. Pimsleur gave me a head start to my government mandarin course.

Back when the Venezuelan telenovelas were the best. There was also a PBS show teaching Spanish with soap opera style episodes.

When I was 12, I asked my Grandpa if he would teach me Czech. He grumbled a little at me, then said something in Czech. I repeated it a few times, and he corrected me when I said it wrong. Then I asked him what it meant. The answer? “Go jump in a lake.”

I didn’t understand that was an idiom till I asked my Mom about it. Silly kid! I didn’t know it at the time, but I must’ve been such a pest back then. Of course, you know I had asked him while he was busy working on a project. Love that man!

Seems the military has a good system, but I think they screen those who go to the school. My wife’s sister’s husband was Lt in the Navy. We went to Monterrey to visit. He was in arabic class first day and was trying to read a paper from the middle east. First day assignment. The whole class was in arabic, no english.

He must have had a knack for languages because he was fluent in Vietnamese reading and writing. In the war they put him and his family in a house in Manila and flew him to Saigon every Monday morning. He translated docs.r He did see an “interrogater” take two NV up in a chopper and they pushed one guy out The seocond guy decided to talk.

He beat up my sister-in-law and don’t know where he went from Monterrey. But the school then was total immersion and they started with people with apptitude.

I’ve looked at Italian Uncovered - learning through story.

Has this method worked for you?

Can you understand? Can you speak with others?

Berlitz.

Spend the money and do it right.

Just go for the initial interview, which is free, and they have you conversing in sentences before you leave.

The feedback machines for getting your accent right are better than the ones at a top-ten university.

Once you learn a language, it means you learn how to learn languages, and can apply those concepts to learning new languages.

The biggest hurdle is learning how to learn a new language.

If you’ve mastered several languages, mastering a new one becomes fairly simple.

I liken it to computer languages, once you learn Java, you can learn C# or Python fairly quickly.
