"Today", December 31, 1862, the war's 167th engagement, at Parker's Cross Roads, Tennessee, CSA victory (sort of).
Nathan Bedford Forrest's outnumbered Confederate cavalry outfought Union BG Sullivan's Ohio, Indiana, Illinois & Iowa Infantry, before escaping over the Tennessee River.

Parker's Cross Roads is the 12th engagement in Tennessee, making it Number 2 for most battles in the Confederacy, after only Virginia.
However, as of December 31, 1862, there are still four Union states/territories with more engagements than Tennessee: Missouri (26), West Virginia (14), New Mexico (13) and Kentucky (13).

So, 1862 ends with the war decidedly shifting into Confederate states -- the count of battles is now 74 in Union states & territories and 93 in the Confederacy.
Still, the count of wins & lost engagements is remarkably even: 73 Union victories, 71 Confederate victories, 23 inconclusive:
