KEYWORDS:
You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

LFM, a three letter word, with the most common letter in the puzzle in third position, the second most common letter in the puzzle in first position. I’m lazy, I take low hanging fruit.

Got it on inspection.

The author’s letter pattern made me guess; the 2nd word letter pattern and grammar gave me the first two words, which are a famous quote; then off to the races.

“When the police arrived and found no lion … and the Head behaving like a lunatic, there was an inquiry into the whole thing. And in the inquiry all sorts of things about [the school] came out, and about ten people got expelled. After that, the Head’s friends saw that the Head was no use as a Head, so they got her made an Inspector to interfere with other Heads. And when they found she wasn’t much good even at that, they got her into Parliament where she lived happily ever after.”

Once I figured out “B” everything came together. The Author’s name was then obvious.

The subject of today’s puzzle is truly one which troubles us all. But I want to share something with you in response to those troubled feelings……

I am remembering In Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” when Frodo said, “I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.” Gandalf replied, “So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

As we lament the situation we are in today and wonder where we go from here, Gandalf’s advice rings true. Our responsibility as Christians is to follow Jesus’ command in His sermon on the mount to be “light” and “salt” to the world, not antagonistic and angry, yet at the same time not agreeing and conforming. To be distinct from the world not because we hate them, but because we love the lost sinners. Not compromising, but serving and loving not for our own praise but for the glory of God.

Keep in mind that when things look unfairly bad, God is up to something, and we can’t be discouraged if it seems that He doesn’t answer our prayers immediately. Out of the horrors of the 14th century plagues that killed 1/3 of Europe, then the 100-years war between England and France, finally there came God’s answer: the Protestant Reformation. Out of the 1600’s when the Puritans were expelled from the Church of England and persecuted, came the movement of Puritans to the colonies and thus the founding of America with a Christian culture. Neither of these answers to prayer came immediately..... yet came they did. Keep praying Patriots, God is up to something BIG.

They must have picked those two first fake letters on purpose.

Because at first I’m thinking Yeats.

LOL
