"It's Completely Absurd": People Are Sharing Things That Rich People Have "Ruined" For Everyone Else
buzzfeed ^ | 12/24/2022

If you think back to when you were young (or even just back to a few years ago), it's obvious that many things in life that were once for the masses have become a whole lot more expensive. Well, redditor u/Lattethecoffeaddict asked, "What was ruined by rich people?" People had a lot of thoughts because the comments came pouring in, and here's some of what they had to say.

1. "Thrift shopping. I used to thrift a lot, but it's been ruined. I used to be able to go thrifting and come back with three new work shirts and a pair of pants for around $15 (and they were good clothes, too, some with the tags still on them). Now, good luck finding my size at all. Plus, the clothes that are left are all shit, and they want $10 for a shirt now."

3. "Bourbon. Once upon a time, the most expensive bourbon you could possibly find was like $100. Now, with everyone 'collecting' it, the prices have skyrocketed. The secondary market is completely absurd."

4. "Food trucks. They were once a convenient place to get good food for cheap. Now they're expensive and don't offer any of the advantages or comforts of a restaurant. Not to mention that they all expect a 20% tip for handing you food from a window."

5. "Trucks. Once upon a time, they were a humble, working-class vehicle for people who needed to be able to do things themselves. Now they are luxury vehicles with massive margins, which have become unaffordable to anyone who needs them to do real work."

You can’t even get a basic work truck any more. Rubber floor? Forget it.

The worst are those stupid cars with the 4 foot beds. Utterkt ridiculous.

I’ve kept my 1998 K2500 and put a new 350 in it. Eff the new ones.

More like the fuel economy regulations that killed off the big cars, station wagons, and even the 2 door pickups.

“I think this person fails to understand prices are dramatically up on virtually everything. Too many dollars chasing too few goods.”

I was thinking, “$10 for a decent shirt with the tags still on it? That’s a steal.” That’s $40-$60 at the Mall.

She’s on target with a lot of these. You could throw in college as well. Rich people can pay whatever exorbitant tuition they charge.

But lobster could still be the “cockroaches of the sea,” if rich people hadn’t start eating it. It wouldn’t be such a treat if it was something nobody wanted.

And while the rich are “ruining” places like Austin, it wouldn’t have been easy to get along with the people who preceded them either. You have to have money now. You had to be “weird” and bohemian back then. Artists’ colonies aren’t necessarily “family friendly” in the right way.

There is a difference between the yuppified Food (or Foodie?) Trucks and the good old fashioned Roach Coaches.

We still have some Roach Coaches around and they are a great deal. Often the food is tastier (greasier? saltier?) than the fru fru crap served out of the Foodie Wagons.

The world didn't know or care about good bourbon until Anthony Bourdain shot his mouth off about aged Pappy Van Winkle. It ruined the industry for the average person price wise.

I wonder how many of these complainers are the same people staying out of the workforce and hoping someone else will pay off their college loans? Inflation is hurting everyone, but especially if you prefer to sit on your ass all day.

With regard to bourbon: The good news is that there are many bourbons, whiskeys, and scotches that get nary a mention on any of the YouTube or Instagram videos.

Even the ones that were hyped a few years ago like Buffalo Trace no longer get any love.

Because of this you can still get some great spirits at reasonable prices regardless of your tastes.

Buffalo Trace can now be had on sale below $20 a bottle. Wild Turkey 101 has always been inexpensive if you like something with more bite. Glenmorangie is a great Highland single malt that's always been in the $20-30 range.

I spent a bunch of money on a Kentucky Owl bourbon and it was no better than a Maker's or Elijah Craig.

I also hear that Pappy's is not so special that it is worth forking >$1000/bottle for it.

We even have a “400 mile garage sale” once a year.

What is a "400-mile garage sale?"

Regards,

People complain about pineapple on pizza, but California Pizza Kitchen's BBQ chicken on pizza is just off.

But if you order anything else there, then expect to get high school cafeteria level quality.

Truly sad.

There are still roach coaches, and they usually go TO the workplaces where WORKING people grab a quick, cheap lunch or snack. Entirely different thing than the “foodie” trucks that have flourished in the urban communities. You go TO those food trucks, because you CHOOSE to spend ridiculous amounts on their bougie asian-fusion tacos.

There are a lot of YouTube whiskey channels. I noticed that when they all started hyping the same brands those prices started to jump.

However, they have to continually generate new content in order to keep viewers watching. The whiskeys they no longer talk about then tend to go down. This seems to be true of bourbons like Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig, Maker's, etc.

I also notice that the YouTubers are all becoming alkys. They started with whiskey in the 80 proof range and have now worked their way up to cask strength at close to 130. They also prefer store picks. So if you're not picky then you can grab a good bourbon, scotch, or whiskey for $20 or less.

Whatever, n00b.

I *am* a WORKING (using your little ALLCAPS trick) person.

You’re really going to get all rude, snotty and worked up about food trucks? LOL Maybe you should switch to decaf. Just a suggestion, newbie.

Merry Christmas!

My dad was GS11-12 while I was growing up, we were broke.

They flat didn’t used to get paid all that well, and even his retirement pay which was about $4500 a month, wouldn’t be squat today. Anyone know what insurance costs for those who are poor folks today? Inflation, and government workers are now paid MUCH more than the private sector.

I’m not going to say “rich people” per se and fall in to the marxist claptrap. But:

Comical:
Employment. I use to get all my paychecks from poor people who bought airplanes and brewery equipment.
Taxes:
Before tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires they use to pay 30% of all federal taxes. Now it’s over 75%
Cheap Technology:
I wanted a cell phone like my dad got from his employer when it was the size of a suit case and costs tens of thousands of dollars. The last one I got was only 100 bucks and fits in my pocket.
Business:
Two friends became contractors because they had to build houses for those awful rich people.

Serious:
Property price in my nice little town. It has been flooded with Silicon Valley types working remote buying up every scrap of land. My first house was less than a car with 100 feet of river front.

Pawn shops.
The local pawn shop sells items more than retail here.

9. "The state of Colorado. I was born there, but now I'm forever priced out of my hometown. All my friends and I have moved because we just can’t afford to live there anymore. It's mostly expensive due to housing, but skiing also used to be an affordable hobby that has become prohibitively expensive."

A lot of these have merit. This one above is particularly personal.

Several of my Colorado native friends have moved to South Dakota. I'll be retiring from the Navy in a few years and there's no way I could move back to Colorado, the state I was born and raised. Way too expensive now.

Plus, it's not the same state I left twenty years ago.
