I live in an early-60's-build house. For the most part, it's wonderful, but it has very little insulation. I've been meaning to rectify that, but didn't yet.

So, after spending a warm night buried under blankets, I wake up to a shivering-cold set of rooms, all under 60 degrees F.... even though me and the missus set all the baseboard heating to max and left both space heaters going.

So, I decide to go to Walmart. I find two pallets of space heaters, one of them Infra-red, and one of them Oil-radiant. Both are electric.

I go ahead and put one of each in my cart, get a few food items, then decide to pick up one more Infra-red heater.... maybe 5 minutes later.

BOTH PALLETS ARE CLEANED OUT... when I get to the register, everyone had a pair of those heaters in their cart.

Luckily, the apartment window faces south, and I’m getting plenty of sun to warm the place, but it is a double edged sword, when I will be sweltering in the summer.

Well that’s just it....and this is the first time ever my car doors froze. So I didn’t know there was a de-icer for car doors.

Your post is so close to our freezing story that I think you stole it! QUIT STEALING MY LIFE LAZ!

Believe me we are starting the insulation process in February on our old house. Old houses are 🥶🥶🥶🥶

Stay warm, merry Christmas 🎄 & we are headed into town later for Chinese. It is brutal. Our animals are toasty & safe, so there’s that.

It’s pretty nice here west of Tucson right now. A little frost on the windshield this morning but it’ll get up above 70 this afternoon.

Of course, the 115-degree temps come summer are the other side of the coin.

We had/have a rolling blackout early this morning here in north Mississippi. And yes, it bothers me.

"Life was pretty simple back then. You didn’t need a phone attached to your head back then..."

I'm glad I was born in 1947, and grew up in the 50's. We had to entertain ourselves, playing games outdoors all day, or playing board games. We had one phone, no rotary. Initially, to make a call, you had to tell the operator to connect you to the number you wanted. Then when rotary phones became available, we had a party line initially. I was never one for hanging on the phone, and my parents wouldn't have allowed it anyway. Even now, I don't use my iPhone for much...just calls to my sons, my short list of friends, doctors, and the occasional text message about prescription reorders, or doctor appointment reminders. I will use the browser to look things up if I'm away from home, but when this phone dies (it's an old one), that's it. I won't be getting another smartphone. I hate them.

I’ve also heard from people who have lived in Ca. and Florida say the West is the best place to live for warmer weather areas....and once there they love it.

Well, I noticed growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area that people who moved east almost ALWAYS moved back. You get spoiled.

I love the East and the South for other reasons - the people there are pretty special.

Dunno how anybody could live in FL in the summer and the hurricane season.

The West is a bit wild but it's OK with me.

Pouring warm water on the lock won’t help if the ice is coating the whole car. Here it rained the froze.Only about 1/4 or so thick. Not even close to 1978 when pouring rain quickly froze turning running water into 4 inches thick trapping my pickup in the driveway.

Johnny: Man, is it cold out there today.

Ed: How cold is it?

Johnny: Well, on my way in this afternoon, I couldn’t help but notice an exhibitionist on the corner, and it’s so cold, he was flashing a drawing of himself.

I do have one incandescent but I doubt it would do much with 40 mph winds with the truck sitting outdoors

Well I think you have to adapt to the differences in the populations because there are differences. I lived in New England for a time and was the hardest adjustment to the people there. Also lived in Florida for a time but didn’t like the humidity.

I think the further West you go the friendlier the people are.

I'm guessing that is electric baseboard?

I still have a land line. I live in a very residential area...people always around. My kids scream to get a cell phone for emergencies. I keep telling them...if something happens...someone will make a call....they're not going to kick me and say...hey you...got a cell phone?? lol

Born in 1944. Yup...played together...had to get home when the street lights went on.
