Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, turnpike personnel and first responders from several agencies remain on the scene hours after a multi-vehicle crash on the Ohio Turnpike left four dead and many injured Friday afternoon.
As of 9:10 p.m., 15 commercial vehicles are being cleared from the roadway. The crash happened eastbound between State Route 53 and State Route 4 in Sandusky County and eventually stretched into Erie County.
Forty-six vehicles were involved in the crash, according to OSHP Sgt. Ryan Purpura. At least three of the four victims were in different vehicles, and none of their identities have been released.
Officials have gone through the scene and are finishing a second sweep while removing cars, Purpura said.
The exact number of injuries has not yet been determined.
The turnpike remains closed in the area of the crash and officials are uncertain of when it may reopen.
Weather factored into the crash, OSHP confirmed. Everyone involved in the crash has been bussed to a facility to stay warm in the frigid temperatures.
The rescue effort has continued through white-out conditions.
Because the Ohio Turnpike is closed in both directions, eastbound traffic is being diverted off at exit 91 at State Route 53. Westbound traffic is being diverted off at exit 118 at State Route 250.

I was driving westbound on the Turnpike right as this happened...
Stopped in traffic while the emergency vehicles were converging on the area..
Drove past the pileup - they closed westbound after I past..
Ground Blizzard conditions was cutting visibility to zero - crazy weather...
I’ve noticed many large scale US map wind directions during storm events don’t represent ground winds. On Lake Erie a NE wind off the Lake brings the blizzards. Some day I need to look those large scale maps. Sure doesn’t represent what’s happening on the ground, maybe jet-stream related?
“This portion of the turnpike runs right along Lake Erie.”
We grew up south of Buffalo on Lake Erie very close to an exit off of the
Thruway. Often when they closed the highway during blizzards we’d have people shacking up in town, sleeping in churches, etc.
I just looked at the traffic on Google Maps. Yikes! Solid red.
I understand they closed down the Turnpike entire.
The office is in Dallas, but only our CEO lives here. Other officers live in Memphis and Florida. My two supervisors both live in Florida, alternating weeks in Dallas.
I'm looking forward to working from home 1-2 days a week next year.
I knew a guy who called them “wipe outs” either purposely or from mishearing the word.
As I see it families should have a plan B if roads and weather are bad for Christmas travel. his was probably the worst one could travel in - such fools!
I have one son coming home this year - he’s 45 minuts away...but we do have a plan B if it’s still bad Sunday.
All the more reason they could have waited.
I remember driving in ice fog. The worst! Besides having no visibility because of the fog itself, the ice crystals reflect your headlights back at you.
Today's 4wd SUV's and trucks give a false sense of security in these conditions and are always the ones starting these chain collisions. I've driven under these conditions on freeways and at times 30 mph felt like I was going too fast for the conditions with vehicles flying by me. And invariably, I'd be passing trucks and suv's that had spun off the road and were stuck in snow banks and ditches.
If you don’t mind a Demorat controlled city because Pittsburgh is. I’m close to an hour or so from there and you’ll never see me there in the city.
Worst area to drive in the entire state. Traffic is horrible. Roads are full of overpasses and ramps, and countless one way streets that will put you in circles trying to escape them. Apartment rentals are very high. You’ll pay close to a grand for anything decent.
Give this site some time and I’m sure you'll dig it...
Once we were all married Mom picked another day in Dec, for our big family Christmas.....
Re: 17 - Grow up. His race had nothing to do with it.
Re: 13 - In areas that have well publicized travel bans, if there are vehicle accidents, I believe that insurance companies will be asking why a driver was driving in a ban area. What impact that has on claims payout and renewal TBD IAW the policy, etc.
Lake Erie in Pennsylvania and Upstate New York had reports of 37-ft waves, and the banks were pure ice and frozen snow
Sad news, but hardly a surprise that this happened.
Weather will be better on Christmas day in most of the country. Can always celebrate with family later next week.
If I had a flight scheduled during this weather event, I wouldn’t have even gone to the airport. Can always visit some other time.
