In the dark hours of June 13, 1942, a German U-boat surfaced off the coast of Long Island. Four saboteurs, under the leadership of one George Dasch, buried explosives beneath the sands of Amagansett as part of an elaborate plan to blow up Astoria’s Hell Gate Bridge, along with chemical plants being used in the American war effort.
Naval intelligence Lt. Gen. Charles Radcliffe Haffenden had gotten word that four men had been spotted and sped out to Long Island’s East End.
But his investigation didn’t follow standard military protocols. Haffenden stopped at Millie’s Inn by Napeague Beach for dinner with a few known organized crime associates. They were essential to a top secret surveillance network he had created with the help of the Mafia.

I like how Dallas P.D. paraded the assassin around for the media cameras and apparently anyone else who just wandered in. A few decades later we find those in government attempted to criminally undermine, compromise and overthrow Trump, as a candidate and then as president. And no one goes to jail. Hmmm..
There are no Lieutenant Generals in the Navy. I think he was a Lieutenant Commander. Find a Grave shows his tombstone listing his rank as Commander.

10. Just some bragging here. I worked on the surround sites cleanup cases for the Alcoa sitesI listed and read the Massena guards duty report books including them shooting at what they thought was a trespassers.
My teacher and head of the Police Science program at No. VA. Community College, William Furcello, was the rookie FBI agent who took the call from German saboteur George Dasch when he called to surrender to the NY FBI office.
I also found Hoover’s report to the president about the sabotage equipment left buried on the beaches in NJ/NY. Sitting about two feet from me.
It was a brilliant move by Naval Intelligence.
What was not mentioned in the article was that during WWI, German Saboteurs blew up an ammunition depot in New York harbor. The Navy wanted to make sure there would be no such sabotage during WWII. The Mafia ensured that. I’ve heard rumors that suspicious people magically “disappeared” *cough* *cough* though gosh, the cops never found out why or where they went.......
The Mafia was also helpful in the fighting in Italy. They not only got Italians recently arrived in America to give pictures of harbors, descriptions of coastal installations, etc but when US troops arrived, they instantly had a very effective intelligence network in place that in some cases told them exactly where Axis troop HQs were, where Axis equipment was stored, where Axis troops were located, etc etc.
As for any objections anybody may have....we made a deal with the Commies to get rid of the Axis. The Mafia were a much lesser evil than the Commies. It was total war. Win at any cost.
Yep. After the war, US Intelligence cooperated with and even provided funding for the Mafia in Italy to make sure the Commies did not take power. Italy had a lot of Commies so this was a real threat.
US intelligence also gave money to the Catholic Church because they too hated Commies and had a lot of influence in Italy and elsewhere.
It worked. The Commies were kept out.

The two attacks in NJ during WWI had to be treated differently because we were blatantly violating neutrality and couldn’t publicly admit it; the 1916 Jersey City explosion (Black Tom Island, in NY harbor) and the 1917 Kingsland explosion (a few miles northwest, in Lyndhurst NJ) were spurred by the US arming the allies. The 1915 sinking of the Lusitania had already exposed that we were using civilian ocean liners to transport the weapons; Americans who sympathized with the Central Powers realized these weapons were being used to kill their kin and set about stopping it (with very few civilian casualties).
A railroad bridge in my town had a small contingent of troops stationed there during WWI to stop saboteurs from destroying it; we are a couple of miles south of Kingsland and west of Jersey City (so the fear was understandable).
