If push came to shove, “Gimme Shelter” is my #1 Rock and or Roll song.
Keith Richard’s understated opening solo is classic.
Merry Clayton’s vocal is mesmerizing albeit with a sad ending of her miscarriage.
At one point during her solo, you can hear Mick blown away saying “Whoah!”
you can hear it here without the other stuff including the voice cracks

American Songwriter magazine had an article that was pretty good. Catherine Walthall is a good writer.
Also the entry in the huge volume Rolling Stones All the Songs. Started with the love triangle including Anita Pallenberg and the Glitter Twins but slid into the Vietnam War and other things, as usual with Keith Richards.

The great documentary 20 Feet From Stardom has a segment on the backup singer.
I first heard this during BCT at Fort Knox in December of ‘69.Thanks to this song along with the fear of being ordered to Vietnam (I wasn’t) I couldn’t sleep for several days.
I actually stood in the corner window sill of Robert Frasers art gallery where one rainy morning Keith Richards wrote the song in early ‘69.
Cool information. She sang the heck out of that! Great song.
True & thanks!
Awesome tune
