Netflix is reportedly poised to cancel the widespread user practice of "password sharing," limiting accounts to one single household in a move to shore up its struggling bottom line.
The streaming company several years ago "identified password sharing as a major problem eating into subscriptions," the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, but did not move to address it until this year due to significant gains in subscribers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
That boom in subscribers "masked the extent of the password-sharing issue," Co-Chief Executive Reed Hastings reportedly told executives earlier this year, with company sources telling the Journal that Netflix recently decided to act on the problem as the company saw a subsequent downturn in subscribers.
The new rules will allegedly go into effect early next year.
Password-sharing has been a long-accepted custom among Netflix users, so much so that the company itself once acknowledged the habit on its official Twitter feed.

Usually you can log in and see all the devices that connect to your account with location and IP addresses.

They should have thought of that when they started their streaming service. It wasn't part of the deal when people signed up in the beginning. It's no different than the government telling our military members that if they want to stay in the military, they have to get the Covid jabs. Being required to get newly released, government-pushed shots wasn't part of the deal when they signed up. If Netflix, and the government want to start changing the rules, then they should grandfather them in, letting the people who enlisted before the requirement remain pure bloods, and making it a requirement only for new enlistees. Same thing with Netflix. People who have had Netflix accounts prior to this change, should be allowed to continue with sharing passwords since Netflix had no problem with it all these years. They can make it a requirement for new subscribers. Liberals always like to change the rules so they get what they want. Then, when that rule comes back to bite them in the ass, they claim it's unfair, and want to change it again. They do it all the time.
We have two homes and I will be damned if I pay twice for one service.
If their free Netflix gets shut down, they’ll just go watch Netflix shows on the pirate sites.

So what?? There are tons of products for which you pay a monthly fee where the terms are changed each month. They can't change the terms for a given month after you have paid for that month, but they can certainly change the terms for the future months for which you haven't paid. If you don't like the new terms, you just don't pay for any more months. It's no different than the government telling our military members that if they want to stay in the military, they have to get the Covid jabs.
