Are Universities Doomed?

Elite university degrees certify very little. And the secret is out.

In a famous exchange in the The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway wrote: “How did you go bankrupt?” Bill asked. “Two ways,” Mike said. “Gradually, then suddenly.”

“Gradually” and “suddenly” applies to higher education’s implosion.

During the 1990s “culture wars” universities were warned that their chronic tuition hikes above the rate of inflation were unsustainable.

Their growing manipulation of blanket federal student loan guarantees, and part-time faculty and graduate teaching assistants always was suicidal.

Left-wing indoctrination, administrative bloat, obsessions with racial preferences, arcane, jargon-filled research, and campus-wide intolerance of diverse thought short-changed students, further alienated the public—and often enraged alumni.

Over the last 30 years, enrollments in the humanities and history crashed. So did tenure-track faculty positions. Some $1.7 trillion in federally backed student loans have only greenlighted inflated tuition—and masked the contagion of political indoctrination and watered-down courses.

But “gradually” imploding has now become “suddenly.” Zoom courses, a declining pool of students, and soaring costs all prompt the public to question the college experience altogether.

Nationwide undergraduate enrollment has dropped by more than 650,000 students in a single year—or over 4 percent alone from spring 2021 to 2022, and some 14 percent in the last decade. Yet the U.S. population still increases by about 2 million people a year.

Men account for about 71 percent of the current shortfall of students. Women number almost 60 percent of all college students—an all-time high.

Monotonous professors hector students about “toxic masculinity,” as “gender” studies proliferate. If the plan was to drive males off campus, universities have succeeded beyond their wildest expectations.

The number of history majors has collapsed by 50 percent in just the last 20 years. Tenured history positions have declined by one-third to half at major state universities.

What company wants to hire a wokeist with a degree in gender studies?

A company getting money from Deep State to go woke.

A company with woke institutional investors pressuring the company’s board to go woke.

A company that has stagnating sales and figures it can give the bottom line a goose by going woke.

I think certification, with multiple certifications leading to a diploma or degree is the future.

Give me an 18year old from a good family with the desire to learn how to make it in this (evil capitalistic) society any day over a so called educated (brain washed) 4 or more years older citizen.
The book of hard knocks does still have interpreters.

Our most popular majors are Computer Science and Business Info Tech/Accounting. The business school demands the largest venue for graduation.

Took 38 years for me to finish my bachelors and in May, after 6 years I will graduate with my MBA. I started with 27 college credits in 2012. My company paid for every class, every book and anything else I needed for my degrees.

I learned one very important thing from my experience. I will not hire anyone from an Ivy League school. I don’t need book smart whiners who think they are entitled. I need people with common sense, are committed to ensuring their customers success and can think on their feet and make decisions.

Well done, FRiend! I'm on my "last rodeo", as a Tax Accountant for a large real estate company in Dallas. I've been there less than three months, but I saw all I needed to see my first week on the job, when our CEO was making coffee!

That may seem a bit simplistic, but the company is run by adults, senior managers are brilliant at what they do. I'll turn 69 in several months, plan on being there as long as I'm able to do the job.

Haven't seen any Gen Z workers there, they probably wouldn't last very long.

Let’s hope so. Now that student loans are going to be paid for by the taxpayers, I don’t think there are enough people in this country paying enough taxes to pay the little kiddies’ loans.

What caused the disintegration of academia? There are probably many issues I have overlooked, but the above come to mind.

I went to college (started) - but learned very little there of any relevance.
In the fast-moving fields of computer science / software engineering /
software development - the curricula were quite outdated.

Over 95% of what I learned - that was of any use - was self-taught.
With a few notable exceptions, of course.
Those exceptions being professional engineering seminars
conducted by corporations like Intel, HP and Oracle.
Got my first software development job when I was 20.

So basically, self-motivation beats the heck out of ANY college degree
in my book.

“What company wants to hire a wokeist with a degree in gender studies?”

I can’t understand why people say things like this.

They all do. Every corporation. Communists are in high demand. I have seen this for years on major corporate career boards. Go right now to PWC careers and they won’t hire anybody unless you’ve been indoctrinated into a communist for 4 years.

6 year communists are preferred.

Even for the internships - the internships - these companies demand communists. Go look. Search is our friend.

Outstanding! My path was a little different. I started college in 1983, but after a year and a half decided I was wasting my father’s money. I joined the Air Force in 1985, and literally saw the world. During my last assignment on active duty, I used my tuition assistance and G.I. bill to the max and squeezed out two associates, one B.S and two MS degrees (physics and engineering). I had five years of almost 18 hour days with work and night school, but it paid off in the end. I love what I do with weapons physics, and I’m pretty good at it. I think everyone should pass on college out of high school and see what actually fits for them.

Many ignore the fact that over the past two decades their have been an increasing disparity between enrollment of women vs men. It is no coincidence that women are increasingly voting Democrat. Women lean to the soft sciences where the greatest push for woke ideology is pushed.
