LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Lionel Messi finally won the biggest prize in soccer as Argentina beat France 4-2 in a penalty shootout Sunday to claim a third World Cup title despite Kylian Mbappé scoring the first hat trick in a final in 56 years.
Gonzalo Montiel scored the clinching penalty kick as Argentina won after a 3-3 draw.

Are you a braindead idiot?
Poor baby does not have a sense of humor. It is boring though. Makes baseball exciting.
The ref gave a yellow card to one of the French players who flopped in the box. It was a superb call.
the french team is black???
I’m with you on the quality of the center referee. He was on top of everything. I’m glad you commented on him.
It was an amazing game that Argentina deserved to win. The buildup to Di Maria’s goal was a master class. Messi’s ball skills that opened up the counterattack was incredible. Messi is the GOAT.
Just one example — Many cities in China were locked down due to the spread of Omicron in the country ( actually a very weak variant of Covid ). So, what do people do at home? Heck, they watch the World Cup ! And what do they notice?
Hundreds of thousands of spectators sitting next to each other in a stadium WITHOUT MASKS !
The locked down Chinese begin to ask themselves why the heck are people everywhere else FREE to risk the Omicron virus and NOT getting sick or dying while they are being forced to stay home, in effect, being under house arrest for months.
This, and a fire in Xinjiang that killed at least 10 locked down residents actually became one of the catalysts for the unprecedented mass protests in China that eventually forced the Chinese Communist Government to loosen restrictions and open up somewhat.
It reminds me of those old TV commercials from forty years ago where people say to themselves, I could have had a V8.
Now let's all embrace Soccer, and call it Football, because Communist leaders can then, trick their oppressed billion and a half people into thinking they are just a little bit freer? That is worse than the hype these World Soccer commercials have put us through.
Exciting match, it being settled by penalty kicks was a bit of a let down after the 3-3 tie. There were some good plays. The hat trick by the French player in a losing effort .
Corked bats. Spitballs/substance balls. Deflate-gate. Stolen signs/signals. Loose or overly tight rims. Steroids. Blood doping.. etc.
I'll continue watching videos on YouTube and playing Toon Blast!. I'm on the 24th stage of the Champions League Episode 156 of Level 7451. My team is in second place of out biweekly Team Tournament and I am in 4th place ranking within our 50 player team. The tournament ends in six hours.
The most popular game in the world speaks for the quality of the other people of the world. I've lived there and I know. But that's OK, they don't understand us too.
RE: the french team is black???
Why be surprised? The American Basketball Team has been mostly black since the 1980’s.
Get thee behind me satan
so’s most of the nba... the frogs couldn’t find one frog???
That right there is what’s known as a straw man argument. I was it, and am not, defending any of those other forms of cheating. But you didn’t, and don’t see those in EVERY SINGLE GAME, multiple times.
Did not watch one minute of it and survived.
*** The buildup to Di Maria’s goal was a master class.***
I have to say, I think that is the most perfect team play I’ve ever seen. I am still stunned by how artful it was. Just beautiful.
Referees play a special role in the game, and I think this was the first game I’ve ever watched where I agreed with every call or non-call made. This game will live on in my mind as a special one for years to come.
Yep, only blacks on the French National team. /s

You see fake fouls and denial of fouls all the time in the NBA. Holding occurs all the time in the NFL. Sometimes it gets called. Other times it doesn’t. Soccer has VAR, so they are trying to be accurate about real fouls and diving.
Yes, but the commercials were almost as painful as the Disney commercials are.
Certainly a young Messi does not make that mistake. As for "average" team I got the feeling they were not used to playing as a team. Each game on the way to the final they seemed to improve their team play.
One thing I didn't understand was why Di Maria taken out of the game so early? He seemed to be playing at a higher level than the rest of the team (except for Messi of course). His goal on the counter attack at 36' was incredible. Kudos to Mac Allister for the assist.
Indeed. I never understood the appeal of soccer.
