they won the ghetto lottery. Why not make 140 BILLION?
Why not just give them $1 billion even? Its a nice round number.
I am getting absolutely sick of these absurd jury awards, especially when based on a vague idea of what someone “should have done” and when what they “should have done” is not required by law.
It's not Sony's fault that thugs are gonna be thugs. Why should they have to cough up $160 million?
Implement enhanced security measures and people will cry racism. Don't implement them and people get killed because black "up and coming rappers" shoot each other for recreation.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I hope the families don't see a dime.
There should be zero liability on the part of the club, this needs to be appealed.
If you want to sue someone, sue the perp!
By this reasoning ANY victim of crime can sue the city or whatever for not providing a safe enough environment.
They had “No Guns Allowed” signs... What more could you need? Duh!
Could have guessed it. First lime in the article.... LOL
” The families of two up and coming rappers who were killed inside an Atlanta nightclub in 2017”
Police said Ynoa and Diaz jumped on stage after the second act finished its performance around 9:30 p.m. Family members said Ynoa was the hype man for the main act, Police said Ynoa and Diaz jumped on stage after the second act finished its performance around 9:30 p.m. Family members said Ynoa was the hype man for the main act, Cousin Stizz.
Bautista, was not happy about that and they started arguing, police said. He pulled out a pistol and shot the two victims and shot toward the ground, most likely hitting the additional victims, police said.

People who are victims in every major US city should use the same argument... “Lack of security.”
WHo has that money to actually pay out?
Well! That about covers it.
If you throw a party you had better have metal detectors and body scanners.
In other words: If you can’t afford top of the line security you had better not throw a party.
I am a little conflicted on this jury award.
If the event had those no guns aloud postings then it was the responsibility of the host to provide security that was not permitted to the individual.
If you were permitted concealed carry at the event then I see no reason for this jury award.
Isn’t strange that in this modern age of inclusiveness and tolerance that people have come to expect that “you know there’s gonna be people drinking and having fun and liquor can lead to a lot of things happening”
“Every club where there’s gonna be a big event with hundreds of people or any amount of people, there should be metal detectors and high security systems that will show if someone brings in a weapon, knife or a gun because you know there’s gonna be people drinking and having fun and liquor can lead to a lot of things happening,” Frailan Ynoa said.
Yes, the nightclubs are the problem not the culture of the people going to nightclubs for these types of these events. (And yes, I know that the nightclubs know what they're promoting for these types of events.)
I wish they would make friggin’ “juries” pay the money they award. I don’t think the ahos would be as generous with their own money as they are with other people’s money.
Frailan Ynoa. There’s a good old American name for you. Suing American gringos seems to be the number one priority of the freeloaders swimming across the Rio Grande.
"The victims’ families did not stop fighting once they had a conviction."
Criminal convictions are secured by the state, acting on behalf of all of its citizens to enforce criminal law. That is why the case was almost certainly styled "The State of Georgia vs. Jonathan Bautista". That is your first clue. The families of the victims do not "have" a conviction - the People of the State of Georgia have the conviction.
I don’t see that a club should be REQUIRED to have security. It should be their option and most clubs would hire security to protect THEIR property and THEIR employees.
“two up and coming rappers”
Notice how these thugs families are often awarded ridiculously large sums by juries of their “peers” who just want to make others “pay”. Even when the thugs are partly culpable in their own injuries or death. Their reasoning was that the club should have known that most of their patrons were criminal thugs and should have done more to make sure they didn’t bring guns into the nightclub.
Meanwhile, a poor young child can be tossed off a second floor mall balcony by a mentally ill cretin who should have been locked away from society, and the family is left to struggle and pay for the child’s medical care all on their own, or with very little assistance. The terms of that settlement was not disclosed in the mall case, but I suspect it was a lot less than what was received here.
Also, government officials are given sovereign immunity when their actions cause someone’s death, as are members of certain segments of our society. It is the innocent who pay, both financially, physically, and emotionally. Right and wrong have been turned upside down in our society.
Indeed
If Bautista was convicted of killing the two men, I have a hunch that Sony cannot be held liable for criminal acts committed by someone who was not acting as Sony’s agent or employee at the time. Can we guess that is why Sony did not attend the trial? If the judge even moves this forward, the appelate court will kill it (well, in a sane world will a real judicial system it would).
