Huge Berlin aquarium bursts, unleashing flood of devastation

EMILY SCHULTHEIS and FRANK JORDANS Fri, December 16, 2022 at 2:02 AM CST BERLIN (AP) — A huge aquarium in Berlin burst, spilling debris, water and more than a thousand tropical fish out of the AquaDom tourist attraction in the heart of the German capital early Friday.

Police said parts of the building, which also contains a hotel, cafes and a chocolate store, were damaged as 1 million liters (264,000 gallons) of water poured from the aquarium shortly before 6 a.m. (0500 GMT). Berlin's fire service said two people were slightly injured.

Mayor Franziska Giffey said the incident had unleashed a “veritable tsunami” of water but the early morning timing had prevented far more injuries.

“Despite all the destruction, we were still very lucky,” she said. “We would have had terrible human damage” had the aquarium burst even an hour later, once more people were awake and in the hotel and the surrounding area, she said.

The 25 meter tall (82 foot tall) AquaDom was described as the biggest cylindrical tank in the world and held more than a thousand tropical fish before the incident. Among the 80 types of fish it housed were blue tang and clownfish, two colorful species known from the popular animated movie “Finding Nemo.”

“Unfortunately, none of the 1,500 fish could be saved,” Giffey said.

There was speculation freezing temperatures that got down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) overnight caused a crack in the acrylic glass tank, which then exploded under the weight of the water. Police said there was no evidence the incident resulted from a malicious act.

“Just yesterday we watched it and we were so amazed (by) its beauty," she said. "Suddenly it’s all gone. Everything is a mess, a total mess.”

Were any of the crucial calculations made by a woke engineer?

If the aquarium is inside, how could freezing temperatures cause a crack?

Lack of fossil fuels, and limitations on their use could have caused a reduction in heating of the building.

Do you see those drains in the street? Several hours ago they were flooded. Water seeks the lowest elevation and therefore has drained out of sight. More pics at Yahoo and Google if you’re interested.

Especially with water, one has to ask about where it's all going to flow if something fails. I see more and more design and construction where it's clear that neither the engineers nor the insurance companies have the foresight to ask "what if?".

"It will never break."

"Everything works perfectly all the time."

"It doesn't need a redundant system." (I see this especially with electronics in vehicles where one cheap switch knocks the whole system out).

Or in the case of Pfizer and Pfauci:

"We didn't test it but we can assure you that it's safe and effective."

What ... was this thing outside? I would assume that this aquarium would be indoors since it housed tropical fish. I would also assume that the building would be heated to 72 degrees or higher for tropical fish, not to mention heating the water.

Or were they ordered to turn the temp down in the building (or off) during the night time?

I wonder how many water pipes are breaking in European residential and commercial buildings as the heat is turned down to conserve energy and costs.
