ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) - After more than three decades, authorities have apprehended one of Massachusetts’ most wanted fugitives.
Investigators first received word in 2014 that Garcia may have fled to a remote location in his native Guatemala.
Garcia was added to the state’s most wanted list of fugitives last year, but it wasn’t until earlier this year that investigators learned he had been living on a shrimp farm in Iztapa, Guatemala.
“We don't forget. We are persistent, and we never cease in our efforts to secure justice for victims,” Massachusetts State Police Colonel Christopher Mason said. “The fact that we were able to reach into Guatemala to hold accountable someone who committed a homicide in Massachusetts is a result of both tenacious police work and the value of our relationships with local, federal and international partners.”
Police said Guatemalan authorities are facilitating Garcia’s extradition to the United States, where he will eventually be prosecuted on murder charges in Recinos-Garcia’s death.
There is also a second arrest warrant for an assault and battery charge against Garcia in an unrelated incident in Attleboro as well, police said.
Mario Garcia, 50, was found Wednesday living under an alias and operating a shrimp farm in Guatemala, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Police said Garcia attempted to evade capture by jumping into the water at the shrimp farm but was quickly captured.
Garcia is charged with murder in the stabbing death of Ismael Recinos-Garcia in November 1991 during a fight in Attleboro.

I'm gonna guess someone in Guatemala simply turned him in, and probably had to call several departments outside of lunch hours at the State Police HQ to find someone willing to receive the info.
Credit where it’s due. Nice work, Massachusetts.
Yep, he picked on someone smaller than him, and the shrimp fought back
Bet he wishes his daddy was a fake president.
It’s always the last place you look.
“It’s always the last place you look.”
When was the last time anyone, anywhere, was arrested at the shrimp farm where he worked?

He could have walked over the Border convinced some nobody that he’s somebody else and stayed another 30 years in the United States.
FWIW, I had the opportunity to bail out one of Massachusetts most wanted about 7 years back. Yeah, I got the bail money back. She was eventually convicted and got 5 for robbing a bank (3rd time). She didn’t have a weapon, just gave them a note.
Also while waiting for trial they did get her to plead to about 40+ offenses she’d committed over the years. Told her that she was doing the District Attorney a big favor by helping them get those off their books.
Should have left him there! We have plenty of criminal replacements coming across the border.
Wouldn’t surprise me. I had to snicker at the whole “honking my own horn” tone of that guy’s comment.
Absolute bullspit. Someone dimed him out, likely his wife who wanted him out of the picture. A phone call was cheaper and less risky than hiring a hit man, while also letting her claim any reward.
And likely released with no bail under the “justice reform” laws.
When extradited the first thing he said was: “Thank you for getting me out of there! I am SICK of those #@$&+% shrimp!”
I would hope so. Finding something/someone and continuing to look for it/them in other places probably isn't a wide use of time.
*wise
Iztapa looks pretty ritzy.
