The whole point of wokeness is to make you feel guilty for things you didn't do...and to punish you if you refuse.
The human race has gone through a number of ages: the Dark Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Age of Reason.
We are now in the Age of Introspective Contrition, AKA wokeness. The Age of Introspective Contrition is a leftist initiative that exploits guilt to establish thought processes and cultural mores that serve to solidify its political position, which is to pander to the disadvantaged for political gain.
It was ushered in with political correctness, which requires one to be introspectively contrite before framing casual speech content that might be misinterpreted or perceived as hurtful. One who ignores the dictates of P.C. runs the risk of issuing microaggressions, forcing the offended recipient to seek shelter in a safe space to find solace in snacks, emotional support, and if necessary anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medication. Such hurtful behavior cannot be tolerated!
Having established P.C. as a foothold, it moved on to cancel culture, which advances speech control from "you shouldn't say that" to "you can't say that." Any speech now remotely undermining the Party narrative is disinformation, hate speech, racist, bigoted, stochastic terrorism, or a threat to democracy. Just shut up, go to your room, and self-flagellate in contrition. Maybe even lose your job. Repeat offenders might soon be subject to fines or incarceration. Woe unto him who speaks freely! Elon Musk threatens to replace Donald Trump as public enemy No. 1.
Being American in itself is cause for introspective contrition. America was built on slavery. Its society is structurally racist, based in white supremacy. Whites need to overcome subconscious bias. America is primarily responsible for global warming and owes the planet reparations.

The trend of companies going woke is baffling to me. How can business people in high-level positions be so stupid?

Because companies like BlackRock, State Street, and Vanguard have controlling stakes in every major publicly traded corporation and mandate this under “ESG”.
It is the BOARDS that are the issue. About 30 year or so the ago the left saw an easy path to take over, through boards.
Boards run nearly everything in the country. From the American Medical Association, to the American Psychological Association, to the boards of the boy scouts, to the boards that oversee nearly every sect of Christianity, to the boards of every single corporation in America!
And in general ... people don’t want to serve on these boards! And the left noticed that, and took advantage by simply agreeing to be on the boards. Once in place on the boards they took the majority and then started implementing their agenda. If the organization pushed back it usually ended up in a split (think Churches splits like Baptist, Methodist, etc). Otherwise, the organization usually has a CEO, and the BOARD selects the CEO. All that was necessary was for them to pick one of their own as CEO to help implement their agenda. The left actually declared themselves SANE by taking over the American Psychological Association!

I am a member of a non-profit, all volunteer organization and we have two younger members who are using the above strategy against those of us who have kept the organization going for years.

This is my understanding of why corporations have gone woke.
In the past people bought the stocks of individual companies and those people voted their shares.
In recent years most people now buy mutual funds and the fund managers vote the shares.
So we now have mutual fund companies like Larry Fink’s Blackrock who control the voting shares of the corporation.

What you wrote is more succinct than my explanation as to wny corporations have gone woke.
On one hand, I think some proponents believe their own nonsense, that we are all evil intolerant b*stards and that what they are doing is for the good of humanity. That they are virtuous beacons of light too good for this evil bad no good world.
Most, though, are just looking for a tactic to put intended victims at a disadvantage so that they can get all their opportunities and stuff while believing that this is right and good because they prevailed by being smarter than their opponents.
The operating principle that stupidity should be punished seems the more defensible of the two approaches to me, but most won’t cop to it. You can have a good laugh together at the absurdity of it all if they do, though :)
Also, this is a reckoning on the sin of pride. I don’t think you can truly be a humble person while falling for this
I have enough work dealing with my own actual sins. I am not going to take on sins I didn’t commit.
They're not stupid, they're desperate. These companies go woke in a desperate attempt to squeeze any money of it before discarding its carcass.
Gillette is a good example. They had already lost 50% of their market share to online razor subscriptions before they decided to go woke and accuse all men of misogyny and ignore women's misandry.
Target Corporation lost billions on their Canadian misadventure as well as other flops before they decided to go woke and support child predators targeting children in the dressing rooms.
Starbucks lost a small fortune with their CEO who decided to open "take your coffee and get out of here" stores only to have to close them all down years later because their customers didn't agree, before going woke and calling non-black Americans racist.
Coca-cola, as most sugared drink manufacturing, had declining sales for years when they went woke and called all white people racist.
Major league sports such as Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, and the National Football League have had declining sales, especially logo paraphernalia for decades before they went woke and embraced Communist organizations such as Black Lives MatterTM and called all non-black Americans racist.
NOOSECAR went woke after years of declining viewers and race attendees. They've been dismantling seating at race tracks for more than a decade to minimize camera shots of empty stands.
Hollywood movies attract a continually declining numbers of viewers and go woke in an attempt to pander to any viewers they might have left.
Television viewership, both cable and over-the-air, has been in decline for decades and continues to go woke to create controversy in order to sell eyeballs to advertisers. The streaming services are starting off in the red, losing billions in just 2022 alone. They have no option other than to go woke.
I know there are threatened boycott campaigns and I think these companies listen to the squeaky wheels figuring that everyone else won’t care, much less get disgusted and start avoiding them on principle
The proud will be destroyed. Perhaps over compensating because they think everyone else is so dim that they have to go full on propaganda mode just to score the relevant points is one way that pride leads to a fall.
The Age of Grace is coming to an end, then things will start to be made right.
