As South Korea is still technically at war with its hostile neighbour North Korea, all able-bodied men are required to serve in the army.
...South Korea's compulsory military service is a source of grievance for many young men, who begrudge it for taking them away from their studies, work and friends.
For months it was rumoured that the government might allow the members of BTS to skip the service, on the basis they had already served their country by earning it billions of dollars, and it would be more beneficial to allow them to carry on doing so.
But in October, the members of BTS announced they were all planning to enlist, with Jin, as the oldest, going first.
Even so, the reports he was being sent to the front line surprised some fans, who had assumed he would be given a less risky role.
...His advice for Jin is to enjoy this experience. "As a top star, he will not have had much opportunity to meet normal people. This will be good for him, I think."

A Professor of Egyptology, fluent in a dozen languages or more. A guy whose business card simply listed Maui & San Francisco and his name; his father owned the houses and a lot more. A Canadian whose brother was KIA RVN, working hard to even up...
'Elvis was an artist. But that didn't stop him from joining the service in time of war. And that's why he's The King, and you're a schmuck.' - The Muse, "Dogma"
Technically? If the ROK troops weren't there, Korea would become "unified" under Kim Jong-Un. The only thing that stops him is that his military can't match our's and Korea's military forces.
Yawn...
Elvis did this 60 years ago...
I was thinking Jin was a cute
Asian Gal...
Having been a long time Kpop fan, this is part of the deal.
If the greed/ego of their management company didn’t get in the way, they all could have gone during the pandemic when tours were out and be back by now.
One of my favorite parts is when the pop stars perform in uniform. The videos show up on youtube and I tell my friends there was another Elvis in the Military moment.
Elvis was in my father’s unit in Germany. He never had a kind word to say about that scumbag.
That would have been the smart move, but they were probably terrified by the covid fear porn until it was too late to take advantage of the down time.
More like the classic space alien after his haircut.
I talked to a retired US Army guy who served on the border at Korea. He said service in the South Korean Army was no joke. NCO’s would slap you around and make you stand out in the cold if things weren’t done right.
“Elvis was in my father’s unit in Germany. He never had a kind word to say about that scumbag.”
Elvis never had a kind word to say about your father? ;-) Don’t panic. I am only teasing you! LOL
Try waking up to That !
The ROK doesn’t fool around when it comes to military service. My Korean-American girlfriend’s son still lives there and while over there he told me a bit about his active duty in the Army. He also told me that he’s required to be in the Reserves until he’s 45 (I think it was 45).
