Technically? If the ROK troops weren't there, Korea would become "unified" under Kim Jong-Un. The only thing that stops him is that his military can't match our's and Korea's military forces.

I talked to a retired US Army guy who served on the border at Korea. He said service in the South Korean Army was no joke. NCO’s would slap you around and make you stand out in the cold if things weren’t done right.
The ROK doesn’t fool around when it comes to military service. My Korean-American girlfriend’s son still lives there and while over there he told me a bit about his active duty in the Army. He also told me that he’s required to be in the Reserves until he’s 45 (I think it was 45).
