Why Inflation Should Continue to Ease This Month

This year has been full of worrying news for investors. But the king of market movers in 2022 has been inflation...

Inflation is the root of most investor problems this year. It has created massive economic uncertainty... And it's why the Fed has spiked interest rates higher. Both of those factors hammered stock and bond prices.

So each month, everyone's watching for the new inflation numbers. That news moves the markets.

While those reports have mostly been bad news, inflation has come down recently. And as I'll share today, inflation growth should slow further from here.

Let me explain...

Energy prices have played a major role in soaring inflation.

In June 2022, the overall inflation rate rose 9.1%. However, energy prices account for about 9% of the benchmark for U.S. inflation, the Consumer Price Index ("CPI").

Soaring energy prices drove the overall index higher. That month, energy jumped an incredible 41.6% year over year ("YOY"). Food prices climbed 10.4%, while all items excluding food and energy increased only 5.9%. Take a look...

Now, many economists would argue that food and gas prices aren't representative of overall inflation because they're so volatile. But these essentials are what we want to pay the most attention to right now. That's because higher food and gas prices are taking the biggest toll on households and businesses.

And given the outsized jump in gas prices specifically, that's the area that will tell us when to expect a turnaround in the inflation trend.

Take a look at the same CPI table from October 2022...

We can see that energy prices are still high. But the growth is nowhere close to what we saw this past summer.

In fact, gasoline prices have been in a steady downtrend since June. And the price at the pump continues to drop. That's according to data from AAA...

Gas is an easy metric to follow because we see prices daily. In October, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.76 compared with $3.40 a year ago. That's an increase of 10.6% YOY... down dramatically from the 40%-plus readings we saw earlier this year.

The nationwide average in November fell to $3.70. And like October, that compares with $3.40 per gallon from a year ago. So we'll likely see around 10% growth in November inflation when the latest numbers come out.

Importantly, falling gas prices are also a leading inflation indicator – meaning we tend to see gas prices fall before the inflation numbers get better.

Take a look at the CPI compared with gasoline prices. You can see the two metrics move closely together. When gas prices peaked in June, the CPI hit a near-term peak soon after...

Again, unlike inflation, gas-price data is updated in real time. And based on the up-to-date numbers from AAA, there has been a sharp and steady pullback in fuel costs.

This change points to easing inflation growth.

The November numbers will come out on December 13. In October, the pace of growth slowed to 7.7% YOY, the lowest level since January. And with energy prices falling today, inflation growth should cool down further when the new numbers are released.

Anything below last month's level should make investors happy... And if this trend continues, it could change inflation news from a bearish market mover to a bullish one.

At least for this month, we'll likely see a bullish surprise.

Good investing,

Is lower inflation good when demand is crushed and debt rises significantly?

Apparently enough folks aren’t affected by this alleged inflation based on the results of the latest round of (s)elections. Crime and high prices? Meh.

He’s not wrong. We also have real estate prices falling, but not yet reflected in OER, and used car prices are going to rack up negative numbers for several more months. Inflation is going down.

THE PROBLEM for those hoping for lower inflation now is that wage gains are strong, and that is going to help support demand. The sooner we get demand destruction, the sooner the Fed can take their foot off the economy’s neck.

The reason for the cheaper gas is we switched over to the winter blend with costs less to produce. It’s nothing this administration has done.

My truck holds 120 gallons.

Last fill was 5.19 a gallon.

Cost me 500 bucks.

It’s a rollback and one of the tools I use to make money. My fuel surcharge is adjusted to cover fuel prices.

Has massive government spending decreased and have the printing presses stopped or slowed or have taxes been raised massively or have we had massive growth of products and services?

If not, then inflation will not abate.

Makes the mistake of thinking all the other categories will remain unchanged. Germany is stopping the use of fertilizer, the Netherlands is grabbing 3,000 farms....soon food prices will soar.

Its hard to take a supposed financial research site serious that confuses inflation with the price rises occurring because of inflation.

How much of the price decline has been facilitated by the emptying of the SPR. When that is gone, the prices will go up as the occupier of the WH is working overtime to crush oil production.
