I’d have to know more of this story but why would the Mall be responsible for a crime a man had done. Unless he was an employee this sounds like the parents went after a payout.

Probably should leave the parents out of the discussion. Focus on the society that would create the situation where this would occur. This is the Twin Cities the home of George Floyd and Ilhan Omar. When I was a kid I could go to a mall and not get tossed off a balcony. The parents may need help with medical care. I would never think to question their actions.

The article does explain that. The attacker was well known to mall security.

The parents probably need money for the child’s care and obviously the creep who did this is not going to be able to pay them. So they’re probably suing the mall because there may have been a security failure … that is, either none at all, or they’d let a lunatic wander around threatening people, etc.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing for them to sue. It might make companies realize that they have to be more careful about security.
