HELENA – Seventeen state attorneys general joined Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen today in asking major shipping companies to clarify new policies that allow them to track firearm sales with unprecedented specificity and bypass warrant requirements to share that information with federal agencies.
Reports from Montana federal firearm license (FFL) holders made to Attorney General Knudsen’s office indicate that UPS and FedEx are now burdening them by requiring them to ship separately and track firearms, firearms parts, and firearm products so gun purchases can be tracked and retain documents about what specific items those shipments contain and make that information available to the companies upon request.
Knudsen and the coalition of attorneys general sent letters today to leadership at both companies requesting additional information on their new policies and the possibility that the effort was coordinated in part with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
“These demands, in tandem, allow [UPS/FedEx] to create a database of American gun purchasers and determine exactly what items they purchased… In doing so you, perhaps inadvertently, give federal agencies a workaround to normal warrant requirements. This allows [UPS/FedEx] to provide information at will or upon request to federal agencies—information detailing which Americans are buying what guns,” Attorney General Knudsen’s letters state. “Additionally, we recommend that you consider taking actions to limit potential liability moving forward, including the immediate cessation of any existing warrantless information sharing with federal agencies about gun shipments.”

It’s time for competition. i.e. Gun shipping service that won’t reveal any information about it’s customers.
Back in 1968 I ordered a handgun from a company in another state. It came to me railway express in a box with red tape on it with the words “FIREARMS!” in big bold letters.
The shipping cost me as much as the handgun.
I mentioned this to a local gun dealer and he said I was lucky to get it. He said on such packages marked FIREARMS, the conductor would often throw such packages off the train to cars waiting at remote crossroads.
I should mention that this was before the 1968 gun control law signed by Lying Lyndon Johnson went into effect.
I had to ship a firearm back to the company to have it worked on. When the shipper told me to declare what was in it, I simply wrote “Machine Parts”.
Also, Fedex and UPS will no longer allow individuals to ship gun parts, like barrels for example, which have no Federal shipment restrictions. All gun parts have to be shipped through an FFL.
USPS Priority mail is about the only way an individual can ship gun parts or guns without going through an FFL. I’ve never had anyone at the Post Office ask what I was shipping (beyond asking about batteries, fragile items, etc). Of course if I’m shipping an actual gun, I ship to an FFL and usaully have a copy of their FFL license in my pocket in case I’m asked.
Attorney General Knudsen thinks crooks get guns at the gun shop clueless about how many come from over seas and the border cartels chuckle at stupidity.

I, and friends, have lived through similar experiences, when the general population considered Americans, in general, to be honest.
I remember when I could ship firearms that I OWNED back and forth to the manufacturer for service, repair or upgrade without problem or suspicion, but there was always that worry about the manufacturer's name being on the package.
And plus make shipping costs for firearms prohibitive.
Attorney General Knudsen wants UPS and Fed Ex to stop cooperating with, and sending sensitive personal information to, the ATF Feds without the Feds obtaining the proper warrant from Court, as the Law Requires.

I remember back in the 60’s seeing the ads in Sports Afield for 20MM Solothurn antitank rifles. With ammo. Those were the days.
Exactly. Diaper Joe stated that he has tanks, helicopters and nuclear devices so why are they worried about a person purchasing a gun?
Me either, I know when it comes to protecting Second Amendment Constitutional Rights, the ATF is FAST and FURIOUS at any foreigners trying to violate them.
