I was last in SF about 20 years ago and they were talking up the marvelous self-cleaning toilet, that cost as much as a house.
We put men on the moon in ten years. The center of US tech can’t build toilets.
The ancient Romans did better.
Leave it to San Fransicko to call upon a public toilet to “express its values.” Oh well, back to the sidewalks.
This story gave me my first chuckle of the day.
I remember pay toilets. (who else here does?) The downtown department stores had toilets for the public, and it cost 5 cents to go into a stall.
They were made illegal, in part because females (they knew the difference back then) needed the sitdown ones, and it cost females 5 cents.
Patriarchal oppressors (they were called men back then) didn’t have to pay if they used the standup ones.
Feminazis complained, and soon there were no public toilets. Then, in their infinite brilliance, the legislators mandated toilets in restaurants of a certain size.
80 years into the future, and the concept of a public toilet is a disaster. The civilization we had back then is no longer possible. Civility and respect for the rights of other people are largely gone. Any public area without armed guards has turned into a place where violence rules, with shootings, slashings, assault, theft, rape and harassment increasing out of control.
Any city that builds public toilets now can expect them to be filled with needles, drug paraphernalia, blood, condoms, body parts and corpses.
Why use a toilet when you can just crap on the street with the rest of the bums.
And I think they spent several million on this toilet. Idiot liberals can’t even install a working toilet but they think they can run the economy.
Does it say that SF is a shithole?
Was in Galway Ireland back in 1980’s & their outdoor toilet was a small building with a hole in the middle of the sloped floor that connected to the waste system.
like Sam Kinison screamed: “IT’s A F**KING TOILET!!!”
“Futuristic toilet designed to tell a story about ‘the forward thinking of San Francisco’ broke down just three days after inaugural flush”
S.F. turds too tough to swallow?
Al TOLD ‘em they should have gotten a Furguson ...
explained that the restroom was made so that it “figuratively and literally reflected the neighborhoods that it’s in.”
“We also wanted it to tell a larger story ... San Francisco,”
Katz should've said 'Since the city is a SHITHOLE, this toilet reflect that'
Toilet stopped working... Sounds like the government...
Any city willing to buy into that line of BS deserves to be taken.
Of significant note, the greatest effort it seems was to build something that the community using this free public amenity could not intentionally destroy.
In a civilized society, a simple stall would be sufficient but not in San Francisco, where millions of dollars have to be spent designing something that would stand up to the most deliberate and endless attempts to vandalize.
Was it a trans lady, who left the seat up?
How many of us old dudes can remember the open-air toilets in the Grand Canyon way back in the day?
No roof and a simple fence like wall around an 8’ square down at the Tipoff.
NOW look at how they have ‘improved’ it.

I couldn't find the older one I remember.
“Cops show up”, street trash worried about a drug bust in SF, yeah, good one.
