Each year around mid-summer, somewhere between December and mid-January, the skies of South Africa's Gauteng province, including the city of Johannesburg, fill with small white butterflies. Some land in people's gardens, allowing a closer look at the thin brown markings on their wings. Those markings give the butterflies their name: the brown-veined white butterfly (Benenois aurota).
This year, the butterflies have arrived early.
That may seem unimportant. But, to phenologists like myself, it's evidence of changes in the environment that require close attention.
Climate change is intangible to many people. We know it is happening, but our larger surroundings look the same—for now. It's difficult to feel the 1.1°C post-industrial global temperature increase. But we do notice when the jacarandas flower earlier or butterflies arrive in our gardens earlier. This is important in raising public awareness regarding climate change.
In an article published earlier this year, my students and I used media reports to quantify how the timing of the annual butterfly migration had changed over nearly 100 years.

Anomalies in nature have been around since creation. That unfortunately, doesn’t fit the narrative.
They should check the newspaper archives from the last Ice Age. That’d cinch this “climate change” thing.
the soy boys are bitching about white butterflies. Unreal..
And maybe, just maybe, the butterflies know what’s better for them than some climate scientist does.
Interesting. The globe has been on a warming trend since the end of the last Ice Age. What’s a butterfly to do?
Apartheid insects...
What about the 200 years before that? Zero changes or anomalies?
OK, it’s climate change. So what?
White Butterflies? That’s Racist! /sarc
I had an idea for a Far Side style cartoon: It would show Noah’s Ark full of animals that still exist today, with a lineup of dinosaurs waiting to get aboard. Noah would be telling them, “Sorry, we’re full.”
We’re responsible for about 0.28% of heat-trapping gases (including H2O) in the atmosphere, and yet we want to go all out to scrub out what is likely an exceedingly small portion of the current warming. I’m not saying we don’t bear a little responsibility, but what we’re trying to do to stop it is like dropping a nuke on a city to mend a hangnail.
We should just stop it and look to ways to deal with the EFFECTS of increasing CO2 and warming, a la Bjorn Lomborg, not John Effin Kerry or Al Gore or Barack Lives By the Seaside Obama, etc.
I’m waiting for them to find fossilized SUVs from a million years ago, thereby explaining the extinction of species long before the modern industrial age.
We’re effectively still in the Ice Age. It’s just that we’re currently in an interglacial period.
Commies and faggots are taking over our nation... Climate change is to blame..
No doubt these ‘scientists,’ etc. are referring to natural occurring climate change, something that has been occurring for millions of years....
"I'm gonna get me a shotgun and kill all the whities I see!"
Oh my dear Lord!
They’re 2 weeks early! How dare they!
The sky is falling the sky is falling!
...changes in the environment that require close attention.
AND TRILLIONS of tax payer dollars to a communist marxist government to save us all.
Could it be nature adapts to a changing climate??? GASP!!!
