Police: Handcuffed suspect shot officer while being removed from car at Denver jail

DENVER (KDVR) — A suspect being removed from a police car at the downtown Denver jail Monday night shot an officer in the neck, the Denver Police Department said, before at least one other officer shot the suspect multiple times.

Police believe the suspect, arrested earlier in the evening, had a concealed weapon on him while handcuffed inside the back of the police car.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to DPD. The department did not have details on the suspect’s injuries.

The officer was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck, but his injuries are not life-threatening, according to Denver police.

The suspect was initially arrested Monday night after police said they pursued an alleged stolen vehicle in southwest Denver, ending near Iowa Avenue and Lowell Boulevard. Denver police said officers searched the suspect and found a handgun and what officers believed to be narcotics.

Police took the suspect to the jail located at West Colfax Avenue and Delaware Street at around 11 p.m.

It was inside the parking structure at the jail, also known as the Detention Center, when the suspect shot one of the two officers who was transporting him, according to police.

Multiple officers were in the area, and the Denver Police Department said the suspect was shot multiple times by at least one other officer.

The shooting will now be investigated under the city’s officer-involved shooting protocol with results turned over to the district attorney’s office.

Denver7 story:

Police: Handcuffed suspect in backseat of Denver police vehicle accesses gun, shoots officer in neck Officer "has a good prognosis" with non-life-threatening injuries and is in "very good spirits," Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said

DENVER — A handcuffed suspect in the backseat of a Denver police vehicle accessed a gun and shot an officer in the neck while in the sally port of the downtown jail, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said during a press conference around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The incident began around 9 p.m. Monday when Denver officers spotted a stolen vehicle in the area of Perry Street and Arkansas Avenue in southwest Denver.

Thomas said the driver eluded authorities, then stopped a short time later at Iowa Avenue and Lowell Boulevard. An adult male walked away from the vehicle and was detained by officers.

The officers confirmed the vehicle was stolen and took the man into custody, according to Thomas. Officers searched the suspect and found a handgun as well as a "large quantity" of suspected narcotics, Thomas said.

The suspect was placed in the backseat of a police vehicle and taken to the Downtown Detention Center, arriving at 11 p.m., according to the police chief.

The officers parked in the sally port of the Downtown Detention Center. According to Thomas, as authorities were removing the suspect from the back of the police vehicle, the suspect, who was handcuffed, accessed another weapon and shot an officer in the neck.

Other officers were in the sally port at the time. At least one officer returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times, according to Thomas.

Both the injured officer and suspect were taken to Denver Health Medical Center.

The officer "has a good prognosis" with non-life-threatening injuries and is in "very good spirits," Thomas said. His wife and mother are by his side.

The suspect is currently listed in critical condition, according to the police chief.

Thomas said an investigation into the incident is underway. At this time, investigators believe the second weapon was concealed somewhere on the suspect's person, according to Thomas.

The police chief said all involved officers have been on the force for at least seven years.

So it appears they searched him and found a handgun, but he had another handgun?

Happened in NC back in the 90s. Guy had a gun in his underwear that the officer missed and the officer was killed. We heard so many police cars’ sirens and didn’t know what had happened.

There was a trial and and retrial where one lone juror held out from the death penalty and the criminal got life without parole. One family member was jumping for joy as the officer’s distraught family left the courthouse and screamed, “we won!!! we won!!!”

I never forgot that. People who shoot LE should get the death penalty and it should be administered asap.

So the officer shot a handcuffed man multiple times?

In this case, a good shoot.

“”investigators believe the second weapon was concealed somewhere on the suspect’s person””

Really? Brilliant conclusion. He’s still alive so I guess the cops weren’t any better at shooting than they were at searching!

Denver PD has had some issues for a while. I like the new chief, but he’s more of a ‘policy’ guy than a ‘get shit done’ guy.

Yup. There was s dtory in thr local rag, years sho, about a Citizen’s Police Academy that the local popo ran. They planted one of their own in the audience, and asked for a volunteer so thst they could demonstrate a frisking. Dude wad wearing baggy clothes. He had s shotgun down his pants and more than a half dozen handguns, various knives, five handcuff keys.....

And we know nothing about the perpetrator. Except he is not a juvenile and doesn’t identify as female as near as we can tell but that part is not conclusive. And the car was possibly stolen. And the driver eluded the pursuing police officers for a period of time. We can surmise that the perpetrator was not very smart also. Shooting a policeman while handcuffed, what did he think would happen next?

Apparently also the perpetrator is still alive so there won’t be any riots ongoing and I think the policeman or woman should be fired for not doing the job.

This being from TV ‘News’ and writing not being a strong suit of the ‘news’ media and if I read it correctly, the officers were a little too complacent and stopped searching after they found the first gun & drugs.

Yeah. Right now the Denver news is all about the snow. And a bear attacking an inflatable deer.

Over the course of many man-years, you are going to miss a few. It happens. Some of these jerks are Houdinis. Police firearms are deliberately less lethal than military, for one thing to prevent stray rounds from hitting someone several blocks away.
