Anyone else rooting for Iran today?

Posted on 11/29/2022 6:55:25 AM PST by bigdaddy45

Okay, before you go nuts, hear me out.

Soccer just isn't our sport. We suck at it. The USMNT is going nowhere, and they're just a bunch of virtue signalers anyway.

The Iranian team almost literally is playing for their lives. They have been protesting their government by not singing for the anthem, and there are reports their families are being threatened if they don't "behave". If they lose, there is a decent chance a few of them will just be disappeared.

So lets say they beat the US. They will be national heroes. It will be very very difficult for the Mullahs to crack down on them, and their voices will be amplified. And, the Iranian people will have another group to rally around in their quest to topple their government.

Flame away.

Yes. A uniform piece decided by Nike and approved by team administration.

I have always rooted for the Iranian people against their religion and government. This particular team has more moral conviction than the USA team.

If I was on the US team I would have quit in protest.

Any other action is enabling the pervert squad.

Greatness and honor often requires sacrifice.

Liberals are drawn to soccer precisely because it is one of the few remaining venues where American exceptionalism does not prevail. The World Cup, rather, is a working model of President Obama’s foreign policy vision: a world in which America has no special role, where inferior countries are no longer humbled by American greatness, where every country is exceptional, and free shots on goal are not earned, but given away as a handout to those who have mastered the art of falling down. In the group stage, at least, the games can end in a tie.

Was discussing this with my son’s yesterday. These Iranian guys face a very likely death or at least torture if they loose. I’ll bet their families, are in fact, under control of the government too. My oldest hopes we drop 15 goals on ‘em. My youngest would flop to help them. I’d play my game and let the chips fall. Maybe they’d be more useful as martyrs? I suspect if you put a rifle in theirs hands, chances are pretty good they’d pull the trigger on me and mine, so there’s that.

You make a good point. Other than that, I have no opinion on the outcome. Maybe someone on here will post the score (0-0 with a kickoff?) and then we can speculate about the ramifications?

Since you put it that way, and I think soccer sucks, and the American team sucks. I say; “Go Iran!”

FYI - Iran asks FIFA to remove the USA from the World Cup because they’re offended

Vinny Castilla was one of the original Colorado Rockies. He donated the money to build a baseball diamond at the local United Way. 'Vinny Castilla Field'.

A baseball game was never played there. They bulldozed the pitcher's mound, and painted a soccer pitch.

Then they built a playground in the outfield. Shameful.

The regime will use a victory of the U.S. for propaganda purposes. A humiliatingly defeat will embarrass the regime. The worse, the better, I say. The players knew what the scorpion was before they agreed to give it a ride. If any harm befalls the team members, it will discourage others from representing Iran in any way.

Isn’t it something how those millionaires get kicked in the shin and they roll around on the ground like they’ve been gutted?

Or as Bill Shultz of RedEye once said “soccer is boring to watch, but it’s fun to do....much like a fat chick”
