Only in Florida does cocaine drop from the sky

It's a quiet Wednesday evening, and in a nice home in a nice residential area of northwest Homestead, Fla., a neighborhood Crime Watch group is holding its first meeting.

"So I look up," Ivy recalled later, "and this plane is coming, and it's low. It's VERY low. Then I see a package come sailing down."

And of course the package turns out to be a 75-pound bale of cocaine. Falling out of the sky. During a CRIME WATCH MEETING.

An oldie but a goodie. For historical context, this one happened before Free Republic was even founded, if I remember correctly.

No indication, as far as I could tell, whether the traffickers were actually from Florida.

Back in the 80s it was not all that uncommon for bails of pot to wash up on the beach here (opposite end of the state than this story)

It was affectionately known as “seabo”

If you were johnny on the spot you could knick some of it before the authorities found out.

Myself and a bunch of other GIs were minding our own business, drinking at a bonfire outside of Homestead, back in the mid-80s. All of a sudden we got lit up from the other side of a canal, and cops are yelling at us not to move. I guess they’d interrupted a drop, and had people running on the ground. They were trying to figure out how to get on our side of the canal, so I told them. They’d have had to go drive about a mile, so I guess they figured it wasn’t worth it.

He claimed to have brought a planeload of weed into HAFB. It might have been the weed that was later dragged out and put on display when President Reagan visited.

In 1976, I was assigned to Company C, 2/12 Cavalry, and our unit was stationed at Wildflecken, Germany, on a Brigade-75 rotation. While there, that winter, we were on "wargames" with the West German Army and we were moved to the Ludwigshafen/Mannheim area to patrol the west bank of the Rhein to prevent "infiltrators" from crossing the river.

At the time, I carried the M60 machinegun. Late one cold night, we heard sounds from the river. The squad leader checked to see if there were any friendlies supposed to be on the river and, when he was told there was not, we set up an ambush. As the sounds drew closer, the squad leader popped a flare and we all opened fire. I had about a 200-round belt on my hog and was firing 10-round bursts ...

... under the flare, there was some fisherman frantically pulling on his oars for the other side of the Rhein as I was expending the last of my ammo ...
