Hamptons house where vacationing sisters died in overnight fire misrepresented on rental site: lawsuit

The family had used the house’s outdoor kitchen, which had never been inspected, according to the lawsuit. The smoke and carbon monoxide detectors also weren’t functioning, court documents reportedly said.

The sisters were vacationing at the home with their parents and brother who made it out of the house alive.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still underway but Southampton’s public safety and emergency management administrator said in late August that it likely started in the outdoor kitchen, according to the East Hampton Star. The homeowners are facing dozens of code violations in the town of Southampton.

The $1.8 million house had been rented by the Wiener family for the week for $8,000.

West Virginians lived in those for generations without mishap.

The problem is systemic stupidity, and that's a fact !

1.8 million bucks, rented for $8000/week and no working smoke or carbon monoxide detectors? Insanity. Utter insanity.

The problem with AirBNB and these other sites is that they can claim they are not liable for when something goes wrong. Why I never use AirBNB and only use hotel chains like Hyatt.

This is going to be the most expensive $8,000 they ever earned.

The whole Homeaway/AirB&B industry has caused the walking distance ocean front real estate to increase exponentially in the last five years. Any house within walking distance to the ocean has increased much faster than houses inland.

One of my buddies owns a house in York Beach, ME. It is a five minute walk to the beach. He rents it in the summer by the week for over $5000. He bought it five years ago for $550K. It is now worth over $1MM. He lives in it during the off season. The summer rental pays the mortgage the entire year. He originally rented through Homeaway. Now, he has a website because it is basically just repeat customers.

They rented a house with “dozens of code violations.” Those owners who rented the place out are going to have their lives upended until the end of their days. Given how irresponsible they were, I doubt they have the necessary liability insurance.

I have a pal who bought a house in seaside, florida, at the dead nadir of the financial crisis for $410,000. He had vacationed in Seaside and thought it was an absolute Paradise, so he knew more than a little bit about the area. That house has solidly quintupled in value, and he rents it quite regularly on VRBO. That was one hell of a gutsy move.

And I might add, that he got paid a tad under $50,000 by BP for lost rentals when they had that big oil rig blowout in the gulf, 2010 I believe.

I know a guy split up with his ex wife in 2008. So, he moved from NH to FL and bought a house across the street from the Gulf of Mexico in Clearwater Beach Fl for just over $400K. He sold it a couple years ago for well over $1MM.

Keep in mind though, even back in 2009 he said his insurance was around $4K/year between wind, homeowners, flood, etc.

My old boss’s family rented a house at the beach here in Oregon. The parents went for a coffee walk in the morning. A small airplane got lost in the fog and crashed into the house. They watched as the kids burned to death in the upstairs windows trying to get out. The owners had painted the windows shut and they couldn’t get out. 2 teenagers and a few younger ones too. Never heard the outcome but he was never the same and retired within a year. Damn horrible thing to happen to a great guy.

I went to a fire scene at a lakeside rental property where an occupant had died in a fire. They had provided a surface range for cooking your fish, but had neglected to put a $20 smoke detector in each room.

AirBnB is okay with homes that might kill you, but you’ll sleep well knowing that they will not tolerate any discrimination against LGBT people.
