Here is a true historical story of violence for Joy. My ancestor, Rev. John Roads/Rhodes and his family were brutally slaughtered in 1764 at Luray, Virginia. He was a pacifist, who embraced the Indians way of life, inviting them to his home for food, shelter and Christian friendship. In August of 1764, he and his wife were shot and died in their doorway by the same Indians he befriended. Eight of his thirteen young children were scalped and slaughtered, two sons were taken by Indians and the rest escaped. I don’t believe my ancestor ever owned a slave. He was known as a wonderful man who fled Europe with is family from religious persecution. The good news is, the remaining sons, who were raised as Christian pacifists, took up arms in the American Revolution.
