A study demonstrated that shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is associated with an almost 30% higher long-term risk of a major cardiovascular event such a stroke or heart attack.
"Our findings suggest there are long-term implications of shingles and highlight the importance of prevention," said Sharon Curhan, MD, ScM.
Approximately 1 in 3 individuals will develop shingles in their lifetime, with more cases projected as the population ages and more people have compromised immunity due to disease or medication use.
The most common complication from shingles is postherpetic neuralgia. This condition affects nerve fibers and skin, causing burning pain that lasts long after the rash and blisters of shingles disappear. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that reactivation of the virus may have even longer lasting side effects.
The virus may play a role in the development of cardiovascular disorders, including stroke and coronary artery disease. The virus has been detected in large and small blood vessels, which overtime can cause inflammation as well as chronic vascular changes. These changes can increase the risk of blockages in the blood vessels, restricted blood flow, and cardiovascular events such as strokes and heart attacks.
The team followed participants for up to 16 years and evaluated whether those who had developed shingles were at higher risk for stroke or coronary heart disease years after the shingles episode.
The researchers tracked incidences of stroke and coronary heart diseass. Researchers also evaluated a combined outcome of cardiovascular disease, which included either stroke or coronary heart disease, whichever came first.
The results showed that people who had previously developed shingles were at 30% higher long-term risk of a major cardiovascular event compared with those who had not had shingles, and the elevated risk may persist for 12 years or more after having shingles.

Yes. I had them twice. Both bouts brought on in high stress situations.

It’s also effective even if you waited till you’ve already had one bout. You will never want to get it again.

I read the entire article. Almost at the end it said that it appears to be not so likely after 12 years. Not a direct quote, but that was what they are saying.
I had shingles 60 years ago. I would rather trust luck than big pharma.

I got Shingles , probably 10 or more years ago. I have never experienced anything that bad. I still have sensitivity to my upper right side, around the neck and shoulder. My wife and I took the vaccine, which at the time they were not totally convinced of it’s duration. Now I hear they give two shots a month apart and it is more effective. Although the vaccine could cause shingles?
Thanks for helpful information. I’m just starting to get over the worst sore throat and cold/flu(?) I’ve had in years. Doc gave me antibiotics, nose sprays and other crap...One of the grandkids sent 5 types of soup, Ricola cough droops, Kleenex and cold press coffee so I wouldn’t have to make coffee. It might be a few months before I take something that’ll make me feel even close to this bad again. Again, thanks for future reference. I will get the shot in the springtime.
The Shingrix vaccine is a dead virus vaccine, so can’t cause shingles. But given the target population of old people with waning immunes systems, some will not achieve additional immunity. Remember, it’s caused by reactivated chicken pox virus that’s been hiding in your nerve tissue since you had it the first time.

A double shot. Oh dear God I’m in trouble.
Updated one. You get one shot and then two weeks later you get the other. I believe it’s two weeks anyway but they’ll tell you after you get your first shot how long you have to wait but something tells me it was two weeks.
I had the chills for a night. I’ve never been so cold, but it was over by mid day the next day.
Anyone notice the warning in the Shingrix commercial about Guillain-Barré syndrome? You think shingles are bad, GBS almost killed my cousin. I also read that Ivermectin is effective against shingles.
Or the same issues that make some susceptible to a shingles outbreak are the same issues that lead to developing cardiovascular issues.
