Three Oklahoma teenagers were killed when they broke into a house and were met by a homeowner with an AR-15. Now the grandfather of one of the teenagers is speaking out about his grandson’s death.
According to KTUL-TV, Leroy Schumacher, grandfather of 17-year-old Jacob Redfearn, believes the death of Redfearn was unjustified because the homeowner’s AR-15 gave him an unfair advantage over the three burglars.
Speaking to KTUL, Schumacher acknowledged that breaking into a house was “stupid,” but death was not the appropriate consequence.
“What these three boys did was stupid,” Schumacher said. “They knew they could be punished for it but they did not deserve to die.”
“Brass knuckles against an AR-15? C’mon. Who was afraid for their life?” Schumacher said.
The homeowner who pulled the trigger has not been charged with any crimes because police say he acted in self-defense. But Schumacher reinterated his belief that the consequences literally did not fit the crime.
“There’s got to be a limit to that law, I mean he shot all three of them — there was no need for that,” he told KTUL.
In addition to Redfearn, 19-year old Maxwell Cook and 16-year old Jake Woodruff were also shot and killed in the home invasion. Getaway driver, 21-year-old Elizabeth Rodriguez, was not injured but later arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree burglary.
Police also say Rodriguez admitted to planning the burglary.
More from CNN:
Rodriguez went to police in Broken Arrow, a Tulsa suburb, and told them she was involved. Oklahoma state law says that first-degree murder occurs if “any other person takes the life of a human being during … first degree burglary.” Another condition is if a person causes the death of another person with “malice aforethought.”
In the end, Schumacher said he supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms but doesn’t agree with killing home invaders.
“These boys’ families are going to suffer with this the rest of their lives, we have to live with this the rest of our lives,” he said. “You can’t change history, but you can damn sure learn from it, and maybe some kids will learn from this.”
This happened several years ago
>>Where are the Freepers saying they know this is a black criminal?<<
Turns out one was; youngest was definitely white; one looked bi/multiracial.
She, the driver, Hispanic; other person in car unknown, as she won’t say, and the ‘teens’ can’t.
In addition to the knucks, they were also sporting at least one knife.
It was the homeowner’s son, seemingly home alone, who shot them.
She admits that it wasn’t her live-in boyfriend’s first home robbery; and that she “planned” it i.e. goaded them into it.
If Gramps sues, I hope the jury gives him the horse laugh, and awards the kid damages for his expended ammunition.
“No mention of the fact that it was three home invaders against one homeowner.”
in the video interview, the 4th gang member, the mastermind/get-away-driver admits that they were a serial burglary gang ... this burglary was NOT a one-off ...
Stuff that is important...
The break in took place in 2017.
Zachary Peters, 23, lived with his father and mother and was at home at the time of the break in, which took place in the afternoon. He shot the intruders with his AR-15.
Elizabeth Rodriguez, the getaway driver who planned the robbery, turned herself in. She was charged with three counts of first degree murder. She pled guilty to three second-degree murder charges and was sentenced to 45 years in prison with all but the first 32 years suspended, according to court minutes.
Earlier that morning, they had broken into the home’s detached garage and stolen electronic equipment and liquor. Now, in the mid-afternoon, they were back to ransack the main dwelling.
In an unusual twist to this story, none of the teens had police records. In each case, they had strayed from the teachings of loving parents. Max Cook, for instance lived with both parents in a traditional family setting. He played guitar, went to church, and graduated from high school. Yet, even though Rodriguez was five years his senior and had three young children, Max became enamored with the California native. He moved in with her and they began stealing for living.
Ammo, carpet cleaning, home repair....
Home owner NOT the complaining grandfather.
The headline minimize what the felons doing — this was not a burglary. Breaking into an occupied dwelling to steal while carrying a deadly weapon is Armed Robbery. Carrying brass knuckles shows a willingness to murder the occupant so they could rob him. If anything is “unfair” it is that the youths were raised amoral and stupid. Heck of a job, Grandpa.
Grampa needs to sit this one out.
The grandpa would have felt better if the homeowner wasted them with a 12 gauge instead. Right?
Or maybe a lever action 30-30.
Because that would be “more fair.”
Is there a rule book that says you have to fight fair with thugs invading your house? 3:1 odds isn’t enough? If this happened more often, the incidence of home invasion would drop precipitously.
Do it yourself toe-tags next to the mail box might help deliver the message.
I think that’s the point. The homeowner has no idea what sort of firepower the criminals bring with them. The key is to bring out more than they can handle.
Grampa Redfearn is a dumbass. Apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
Im sure glad he didnt shoot the neighbors...too
That’s kind of the whole point.
And the hollow point too, when it comes down to it.
“There’s got to be a limit to that law, I mean he shot all three of them — there was no need for that,” he told KTUL.
“You can’t change history, but you can damn sure learn from it, and maybe some kids will learn from this.”
Like I said best be careful in this state and get ready to be shot if you mess with their house. People don’t even come in my back yard
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
“ The headline minimize what the felons doing — this was not a burglary”
It was a home invasion which means blast then or die.
A single mom had to do the same thing in the same city not long ago with 13% kicked in her door after 1st burglary
late night surprise attack.
three against one.
the three get to plan and prepare.
the three get to coordinate their planning and their armament.
they get to choose their victim.
vs.
Old guy gets to grab what unoptimized tool is at hand and deal with someone else’s battlefield while outnumbered.
Which one is not fair?
