A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that McCarthy prevailed in Republican House leadership elections on Tuesday, overcoming a challenge from hard-line conservative Representative Andy Biggs in a 188-31 vote by the caucus.

Can someone with more knowledge of the House confirm if the "hardliners" do not vote for him he will fail?
And then what happens?
win?
or did they auto-correct ‘whine’?
218 is needed. And I guess technically they could vote for anyone, including a DEM. This never happens with the DEMs (crossover talk), but there are some conservatives, many on FR, who would love to see it happen.
It’s me who is questioning it not them.
I’m just wondering about whether the hardliners will get behind him & whether he needs more votes?
We’re no longer a republic.
Does that answer your question?
Thank you for the quick reply!
I wonder what happens then if they dont get behind him.
They might or they might not.
Newsmax is running a banner saying “McCarthy has more work to do to become speaker”.....assuming that’s accurate it ain’t over yet.
Interesting.
It just struck me as I was reading the article I posted.
188 (sorry typo in original post) is a little off what he needs then especially when the numbers are tight...
He’ll get the requisite number of votes. Right now, there’s a lot of deal making, trading and other considerations and compromises being made or “extracted” to obtain those votes…
Yes he will probably get them. Don’t you love politics....
But some might make this interesting especially if it’s so slim.
Stay tuned!
And he ain’t the best choice either
I’m just wondering about whether the hardliners will get behind him & whether he needs more votes?
= = =
He has the thinnest of margins. Is making promises and deals.
Will be extorted by Pubs for their vote. Will be tempted (or blackmailed) by Dems for their vote.
If he can’t do ‘Pelosi’, he is in a world of hurt.
The Pubs have a chance, with committee picking, and subpoena power.
That is a little hopeful, but mostly for the entertainment value.
And that is how I value the congress right now; entertainment only.
Why do we call the sane people “hardliners”?
It’s the RINOS and liberal Republicans that are the hardliners. They won’t ever go along with the true conservatives.
The entire house votes for Majority Leader. Last session, Pelosi beat McCarthy 216-209.
If Republicans withhold votes from McCarthy, Hakeem Jeffries will be majority leader because dems aren’t stupid, and will stay united.
Probably why he SAYS he will kick off 3 democrats from committees.
In reality he will fail in the end. He’ll say well we voted and I couldn’t help that some of the GOP voted with democrats to keep them.
What happens then is Pelosi takes her 214 votes, picks off 4 RINOs, and remains Speaker.
There is no scenario - none - where a Republican other than McCarthy becomes Speaker.
That is why he is out there making pronouncements, discussing his “policies”, etc...
Trying to create a reality on the ground.
Why do they take a vote for a Speaker that won’t be seated until the next Congressional Session takes place, with newly elected Republicans coming in? Republicans from the previous Congressional Session shouldn’t be choosing who the leader is in the next one. Since Kinzinger and Cheney won’t be there, are they allowed to vote in this behind-closed- doors straw poll?
in a 188-31 vote by the caucus
Typo, yes.
