Video appears to show Twitter employees who rejected Elon Musk counting down the seconds until they're fired in an empty office

A Twitter employee shared a video online showing employees of the social media site who rejected an ultimatum from Elon Musk count down the seconds until they're set to be let go on Thursday night.

Musk told Twitter staff this week that they would either commit to an "extremely hardcore" version of the company or reject it and resign, with a deadline of 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Less than half of the company's remaining 4,000 employees accepted the offer to stay, Insider's Kali Hays reported.

"30 seconds left - 35 seconds," the employee says in the video, posted Thursday just after 5 p.m. ET.

He then pans the camera to show four other individuals huddling together in an empty office, where a "Love Where You Work" sign glows in the background.

"Everybody here, we're all about to get fired from Twitter. I've been ... nine years and nine months now," the former employee says. He then asks the other former employees how long they worked at the company.

One man says they worked at Twitter for over nine years. Another said four years and two months. "Nine years and a month," another former worker says.

"Happy New Year," he finally ironically cheers as the deadline passes. Another employee throws his hands in the air.

"Let's try the badges," the employee goes on to say, apparently referring to the security badges that allow them access to the building. Twitter abruptly shut down its offices Thursday after the mass resignation.

I notice a lot of “9 year” employees. We have an entire generation that entered the workforce at a time when they have only known easy employment opportunities and very high compensation. This generation is about to learn what it means to appreciate having a job.

When Twitter ultimately prospers with about 20% of its former workforce. The shareholders of every major corporation are going to insist on major cost reductions and workforce “recalibration”.

It’s going to be interesting how the autopsy of Twitter takes place, and what it reveals.

A worldwide entity with the principal goal of influencing elections in the US, I suspect.

I read the Irish and British papers daily. THOUSANDS of Twitter employees in those countries were laid off, “threatening to disrupt Twitter’s vital role in keeping US elections free”.

OK. What do a bunch of Paddies and Poms know about US elections, and which Americans should be allowed to say what?

We have yet to hear about Twitter Australia, Twitter NZ, Twitter Canada, etc - but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if tens of thousands of “employees” with their support animals, their gyms, and their yoga studios actually did nothing at all, while the CIA and whoever else was running the place from suburban DC were “fortifying” our elections.

From what I’ve read, it’s more like they were just employed by twitter. Work wasn’t really a big part of what they did...Really, who cares?

Well, SOMEBODY was doing the work.

I agree, the visible Twitter employee base wasn't doing much of anything - but the true nature of Twitter, and the main issue of WHO was running it, and for what purpose, is yet to be discovered.

The theory being that they failed to select the option of remaining employed?

I’m not sure if these people who are quitting are getting some type of exit package (many months of pay maybe?).

But the reality sets in when that lump sum payment is a week or two away from being depleted -and- you are now competing for a new position at other companies, against your former workmates and many others. Panic will ensue as their previous lifestyle become unsupportable and sacrifices need to be made.

That usually causes people to “grow up” fast.

The other thing that might happen with these folks is that they my try to regroup and start their own social media business ... primarily for the Woke crowd, which would compete against Twitter ... and would probably be heavily funded by leftist organizations. I could see this happening sometime next year.

I watched “Apollo 13” for the first time in a long time the other day.

It struck me how innovative and somewhat fearless men were back then and how they achieved things that appear impossible today.

Musk runs company that developed software that lands a rocket back on earth.
He owns another company that developed software to make a car drive autonomously. Twitter is basically a texting site, like email. I think everyone at Twitter is replaceable.

Yes

They chose to cease employment at Twitter and accept the severance offered. They voluntarily quit. No unemployment insurance allowed

They were not fired.

The prospect of less content moderation on Twitter has unnerved advertisers, The Wall Street Journal reported.
