Paul Nguyen, 27, died Thursday in Medellín in what his sister, Amy Nguyen, described as “a cruel and senseless crime” in a GoFundMe created to help the family bring Paul’s body home.
According to a report in Peruvian newspaper El Comercio, Nguyen had met a woman on the dating app Tinder and joined her at a nightclub.
He then went missing, Amy Nguyen said, and “just a few hours later,” his body was found next to some garbage receptacles, El Comercio reported.
On Reddit, Amy Nguyen said the family believes “that he was going out with this girl and was lured into getting robbed after they got into the car together.”
“His card was used at a pharmacy, however according to the cashier the guy was not Asian,” she added.

Certainly a real tragedy, but who lives in Southern California but flies to Columbia for some strange, there wasn’t any hookers in California.
Home of Pablo Escobar(former) and wild hippos…
A foreigner at a Tinder date at a nightclub in Medellin.
What could go wrong?
He was probably there on business and looked for a bit of after-work excitement.
I remember my very first business trip to Brazil back in 1976. I met a pretty girl on the street and we went into a bar. Within minutes she put her hand on my crotch and asked “want to go to my place?” I was smart enough to know I could wind up like Mr. Nguyen and I got out of there real quickly. I was a couple years younger than poor Mr. Nguyen, but figured out the score pretty quickly.
A couple of months ago I watched a video created by a guy in Columbia where he warned people that Colombian girls do not "tinder". He said there is a well known scam in place to roll foreign men who stupidly think they can just pick up Columbian girls for sex.
He said casual sex or "hookups" are absolutely not done in Columbia, and anyone contacting you by tinder is most likely grooming you for a robbery.
He said Columbia is rife with these sort of robberies and only foreign men are foolish enough to get caught in this scam.
Note to self...
Medellin news.
Still lots of hippos there. Last trip was 3 years ago. They are causing lots of problems.
Colombia in general, but Bogota especially is famous for thieves using the drug scopolamine to turn you into a zombie and rob ya. Women target men who might have money and put the powder in drinks or food.
I recall reading an article within the last year about them being an issue.
Number one animal for human deaths in Africa I think.
Tinder date in Colombia
i think i see the problem...
I’ve spent several years traveling and living part time in Colombia and been on some of the main rivers but never saw a hippo. Great place to visit.
It’s lamentable...but sister of victim says the killer chose money and greed over her brothers life....sad....on the other hand....what was her brother doing, choosing to get in a car, in a foreign country, with a women he doesn’t know... Proverbs 7: vs. 6-23...sums it up...age old problem, ladies and gentlemen...
Option 1: “a Tinder date at a nightclub in Medellin.”
Option 2: a co-worker date at a restaurant in the neighborhood.
What is the better option? Let’s see. Hmm. Option 2 might be better.
Especially when they want an Egg McMuffin, but the Mickey D's is only serving lunch now. Then they will tear the place up!
Oh, wrong type of hippo...
LOL!!!!!
The last time I read up on Colombia’s hippos, there was talk that the government realized they’re about at a population tipping point, after which they will be almost impossible to remove. However, there is a movement to have them granted “personhood” rights that is preventing action. And now, with the economic downturn and the new government’s other issues, I think the hippos are there for keeps.
They love Colombia: plenty of room, nice climate, no natural predators to speak of. They reproduce more quickly than in Africa.
Thanks for the detailed response.
