The Republican Party may be girding for a brutal internal war amid the wreckage of its midterm elections — and Donald Trump is ready to “burn it all down” if he can’t keep his grip on the GOP, predicts New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.
Who or what remains standing after such a clash is far from clear, she noted Friday.
The throw-down is likely to begin next week when Trump is expected to announce that he’s running again for president, against the advice even of some of his allies. Trump has already been trashing potential primary rivals, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and possibly Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and former Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump is “vulnerable” to internal attacks now in the wake of the Republican Party’s dismal showing in the midterms — but “that has happened before and he’s survived,” Haberman pointed out in a series of tweets.
“Extremely few major donors ... want to do anything for him right now and a number of them are having active conversations about the best way to stop him,” she added. “But. Again…sound familiar?”
Nevertheless, the party appears ready to do battle to shove Trump aside to improve Republican chances of future ballot box victories.

Not enough. You need allies in Congress, staffers, support people, governors…your bigger team. You can’t be a lone wolf and succeed.
Hhhhhhmmmmmm. I’ve not liked Trump’s lashing out at GOP pol’s especially DeSantis. He just sounds like a basket case. But if he’s laying the basis for an independent run with Gabbard, a party-destroying run at that, I’ll change my point of view quickly. That would be a stroke of genius. I think Trump truly loves this country with all his heart and if he thinks burning down the corrupt GOP establishment is vital to our liberties then I’m in line with that. it will suck in the short term. But longer-term, I can see it being the best possible option. Thank you for this insightful post. Also,I think Gabbard is legit. I liked her before her departure from the Dim’s because she’s been consistently anti-interventionalist. I consider the constant state of war to be the greatest threat to our liberty (“Waris the health of the state”). Now she’s chimed in on the other greatest threat — suppression of speech — so I’m down. What a great ticket that would be
Maggie IS a twit. She is what twit means.
Javanka is the one burning things down.
My suggestion is that DeSantis, rather than running for President, serve out his term as Florida governor, while using his influence to reform the party at a National level. As it stands, the National GOP is just too much of a dumpster fire, and it won’t be fixed in time for 2024.
Not needing to and not doing are very different things.
What has Trump done? Campaigned aggressively and persistently for virtually the entire ticket, something no other leader in the party has done. The complete failure of the pubbie establishment to campaign with the same dynamic authority as Trump is why the momentum at the polls never materialized. All the rest is BS.
The Democrats wanted Trump at the top of the ticket in 2024, too. LOL.
The only one who can stop Trump from destroying the Republican Party is Merrick Garland. So obviously Trump will not be indicted and prosecuted. What a country we live in!
What is different aout Flirida? Two things. 1, streamlined, honest election procedures. 2, a governor who follows in Trump’s footsteps. Let’s hope he has enough humility to remember that.
From God’s lips to the NYT.
Just a matter of time before NY is a complete corrupt flaming cesspool.
Pure stupidity, undistilled. Did you notice the matchup between DeS and T? T by 4 x 1.
Nevertheless, the party appears ready to do battle to shove Trump aside to improve Republican chances of future ballot box victories.
Because the party was doing so well before Trump ? /S
The Governor is the difference.
His phone SHOULD be ring off the hook..from other governor’s asking how to do what he did.
That number is going to even out very quickly as voters outside of Florida get to know DeSantis and Trump, now a three-time loser, increasingly shows his true colors as a narcissistic crybaby.
“Ready to Burn it all down”?
Too late, it burned down in the last election.
Exactly, he actually does more good at the National level staying Governor. That’s how Reagan did it as California Governor.
The Republican Party did not fix or address the fraud in 2020
The Republican Party used fraud as a fund raiser, but did nothing.
The Republican Party doesn’t care about winning, but loves mediocrity.
If it is time to tear it down and rebuild, OK then.
Bingo as long as the $$$ come in they will play second fiddle
